Apparently GP top up their stock in the aquarium showroom from their big tanks on Monday/Tuesday, so those fishes will only be subjected to lousy water conditions for a day or two compared to 4-5days.. If you are going to buy more barra, just buy them from the Bedfordale guy... cheaper in the long run...

EB is so happy with his purchase from the Bedfordale guy that he made a video.. Although I reckon the reason the barra are not eating is because EB keeps disturbing them with his underwater video...

In regards to your system, not sure... what are your other water test results?

also forgot to tell ypu all my setup is in a shde house with 70-80%cloth that might b the problem any ideas...

Picked up some (very) small barra fingerlings from GP last weekend. There were quite a few dead fish in their "display tank". Of the 15 small ones I got, all made it home (20 mins). When were transferring to the quarantine tank, we noticed one poor thing had some sort of massive fungal(?) growths under the gills, around the fins and on the tail. We thought we'd try what we could, we separated it into (more) heavily salted water and added more air. It seemed to struggle for a few hours, then come sunset it looked to be doing better and even showed interest in some food; next morning it was floating.

Of the remainder, we have lost one to the perils of the tank outlet (sucked against (then finally ripped to pieces through) the strainer. The others are puny, but alive and feeding. Maybe we can give them a better life than at GP?

I must say though, given an alternative, I might get my barra from somewhere else next year? Will wait and see what happens to this lot for now though.

Agreed, they're bigger ones arnt so bad if you go up Monday or Tuesday, which is when they restock the display tanks

Just got off the phone with Tony Bart (Challenger TAFE) 9239 8015 or 0430 514 069.
Apparently he thought that I was still after some barra from a note found on his
table, but that's another story..

He said that he has hundreds of 100mm barra still available. They were reserved to stock up a system up but the system progress got delayed..

So rush in there NOW...

Nope.. The last batch I bought from him were $2 each for less than 100mm. Call him to find out...



Oh well... if it is $2 each... might be worth it... just have two fishes for dinner instead...

I grabbed mine from the tafe about 3 weeks ago now, going great no deaths.

May the Gods of the aquaculture industry duly take note that, this year, due to unprecendented demand (ie. EB's handsome photo appearances in The West propping up the WA AP scene), there doesn't appear to be enough stock to spead across the market.

Let us join together and pray for fertile fish during the next hatchery season, and that they may reproduce in abundance and in accordance with the booming +demand+/-supply-!

More supply = reasonable prices = diverse range of stock suppliers (beyong GP) = healthy competition = happy consumers.

If anyone from NOR makes it to Challenger Tafe, would they kindly grab me 10 units?!

agreed. troutman you should move into barra or get some super fertile SP for next summer

Well I think it would be a bit costly to heat the water for barra during winter down Troutman's way... possibly someone further up north would be more suited...

Troutman has done well supplying us with trouts and silvers... I think he deserves some break during the off seasons...

Actually I am thinking of doing a test run with some Barra next winter though the intention is to grow them out rather than sell them as small fish. I'm still working on a way to heat the water cheaply thru the winter and know it can be done. There is a bloke in Bridgetown doing aquaponics who kept his water at 22c or above all winter using his pot belly stove. Once you get to this time of year its easy , atm my tanks water temps range from 16C (Trout Tanks) to 26C (Perch Tanks) and thats just from where they are located!!

How about piping through compost TM ?
