Hello all,

Been lurking around for a bit and finally decided to make myself known.

My wife and I encountered BYAP at the 2009 royal show and decided straight away that we wanted to have a go. Saved up some bucks and early this year bought a 2 bed outback system from BYAP.

We did a terrible job of keeping goldfish alive for a month or 2 until trout season, and then all went really well with some rainbow trout from troutman. Overstocked with 30 trout after loosing so many goldfish as we assumed inevitable deaths but then discovered that it was just the bloody goldfish and not us, so trout suffered a little and didn't get to full size. (had intentions of harvesting a few early but it just never happened!).

Warm weather now and have taken all out and replaced with barra fingerlings. Looking forward to seeing how they go.

And since I suddenly have a bit of free time, ordered a tank last week and stopped in this morning to BYAP and picked up 2 rectangular grow beds and some hydroton.

Will start a system thread and post some pics of progress of new system and existing set up.

Will also try and put up some pics of out 'good life' backyard. (we're a little proud of what we've managed to squeeze onto 400 square meters in suburban Perth!)

Mike

Hoping this works. Uploading photo via iPhone app tapatalk. (anyone used it?)

This is our existing system. Pretty overgrown at the moment, finished studying for the year now so have a bit of time to get into things.

Hi Faye,

Yes. Obsession. I know...

Picked up a test kit in the shop today, had been avoiding buying one previously as the theory of 'if I don't know about a problem it doesn't exist' had done alright by us this far.

Thought it might be a good idea to start with the new system.

That is possibly the new thing to obsess over. :)

Sounds like your introduction to AP went without a hitch. Mmmm this will be interesting start testing and see what happens now. Warning - don't believe everything you read. Aquaponics has its own rules sometimes. Nature has its own way of dealing with things. Good luck!

We're in canning vale in a house that's about 15 years old. Small block, small house (3x2 on a 400ish sq metro block). When we bought the place in 05 we were living in Exmouth and knew we'd be back before long. Since moving in in 06 we've made a lot of changes to male it ours. No more lawn, space is either used or mulched( look into mulch.net if you haven't heard of it!) added a bigger shed(6x3m) for all our crap, vege beds (worm wicked for those of you who've heard of it - really need some time pit into them at the moment. Chooks in the back (6 hi line browns, 1 bantam who our 5 year old is very proud of, and Georgie the Muscovy duck.) Out the front we put in a grass tree an a nice big deck, and we so far have planted 2 nectarines, a cherry, 4 grape vines, 3 passionfruit, a lemon, a mandarin, a fig and an apricot tree. Up the back we have vacant land that is just bush, I've planted (and run retic to) a mulberry and another gig tree. Inside we've replaced the flooring with marri boards and added a 35m2 loft in the roof space. We have a 3 kw grid feed solar system up on the roof that we hope to eventually upgrade.

Yes, the playground influence is definitely there. Hannah and I both grew up in that kind is environment and we'd like our kids to have the same. They just think that it's what backyards are like which probably isn't a bad thing.

Welcome Mike, it is good to see another in Canning Vale hooked.
Love the backyard, it is excellent to see the great use of space in a small backyard.

Welcome Mike. Which city council do you leave in? Gosnells? I was told I cannot keep chooks. Or is it like most people say, don't ask the council.. just keep it..
