Bit of salt in the water whilst purging will also kill any Temno on the yabbies, though it dosent effect their eggs unfortunately.

Monya did a trial a while back in his bathroom. Purged Barra in his bathtub with no feed and high salt levels, reckons the taste of purged salted fish was better than straight out of the AP tank.

i reckon if you could make a Small tank 200ish Like a Barrell, Put a Pump in it and some air, get the water really flowing whirlpooling, and salt it upto 4ppt then chuck them in there for 48h before kill be no reason why it couldnt just run a small Bio Filter also and then all fish that are newly added could also be Salted up, as a quarantine tank.

500L bunnings tank - $100
small pump - $100
bit of PVC and some rocks for a filter - $10

Not a bad little hospital/purge tank.

Gonna harvest my Jades this week sometime even though they may be small. I will salt the tank to 2ppt and not feed for a few days and see what happens though maybe I should pull one out today and try it for baseline :)

I was talking to Bruce from Ausyfish and he was saying that for the Jades that the bigger buyers buy off him when they go to sell the fish they dont worry at all about salt as that doesnt actually get into the fish ... What they do is not feed them for 3-4 days and put them in a Clean Clean system that has a really good filter system... Then the yucky tastes disappear ...... Its being in a clean system that gives them the clean taste.... will try soon when i build myself a nice Acryilc Tank....

As you say DD... purging them in a clean filtered tank for 3-4 days will get rid of most "off-flavours"...

But "off-flavours" are caused by geosmin and 2 methylisoborneol. These are compounds produced by blue-green algae and some bacterias. Silver Perch are very susceptible to off flavours as they eat weeds and algaes in the pond and also consume large amounts of mud and sediments as they feed off the bottom of the pond. Bass and yellowbelly are less susceptible as they eat more live food but can still become tainted when they eat small Atyidae shrimp which they suck from weeds, etc. and consume weed or mud as a bicatch.

Jade Perch are even more vegetarian than Silver Perch....

But the above relates to pond based aquaculture... and isn't applicable to RAS or aquaponic systems...
