Well maybe those in Perth should just pool together to buy some and get it delivered to a common location, and we just go and pick them up... considering how much they are for a bulk delivery, I don't think it is worth to go fishing them from the wild. Could spread some unwanted disease as well...

Anyone know if there are an American version of mussel, that will not clog up the pipe's....? As i've been thinking about them as a good thing for sump tank's, but have not gotten around to doing the research on them.

RS_ - Be very careful about getting mussels in the US. I can't say much about the native species but the nonindigenous european zebra mussels and quagga mussels are very bad news. Please don't spread these by accident!!! Here is a map of the location for these - http://nas.er.usgs.gov/taxgroup/mollusks/zebramussel/maps/current_zm_quag_map.jpg

While infestation of lakes and streams throughout the West is almost inevitable, the longer they stay clear of these pests the better! Think of all the large hydroelectric plants with intakes that were not designed to defend against these pests. If you are planning on obtaining mussels from the wild be aware that the invasive species cannot be seen with the naked eye at certain times in their life cycle.

You probably already know this but since this forum is public this is for all the people that don't!

yeah, the impact of the zebra mussels on the ecosystems won't be really known for a long time.. they're starting to find them in native fish stomachs, as well as gobies (another invasive species in the great lakes) now they're selling gobi lures. the zebra mussels have cleaned up the water in lake erie considerably, but the damages to some spawning structures are noted as well..

i just read a pretty long article on the asian carp, enviromental groups are trying to get the locks to lake michigan shut down to prevent the carp from entering lake michigan, the articale i read posits that they won't do as well in the lakes as they do in the rivers.. the debates rage, but the damage is only beginning

Rainbow trout and chinook salmon were purposely introduced to the great lakes for sport fishing..

Zebra mussels are a major introduced pest in Aus. I doubt we would be able to import them but they are a serious issue if they get into the waterways. Darwin Barbour was infested, so they turned the whole place into a chlorine swimming pool to try get rid of them.. Killed everything

Yeah, they really very good filterers.

With regard to eating, you'd get the same satisfaction chewing on your boot.
