Well I finally decided to move some small bok choi from my outdoor aquaponics to my indoor aquarium. LOL I know it sounds weird. Fish poop is fish poop right? I actually don't plan on eating this b/c of certain circumstances with a broken heater... It's a test to see how my bok choi do with little fish and if they destroy the floating roots. So far some of my fish just ate the muck and algae off of the roots. My siamese algae eaters loved it as did my endler guppies. My Celestial Pearl Danios and Cardinal Tetras left it alone. Too bad my shrimp jsut recently kicked the bucket due to (I surmise) a broken aquarium heater that somehow leaked copper into my tank. My heater was releasing bubbles and I didn't pay any mind to it. Durr bad move. Some people seem to think that a little bit of electrochemistry took place as the copper metal wire in it acted as a cathode/anode and the copper corroded off of it and entered into the water column thus killing ALL my Red Cherry Shrimp which sucked b/c I had a ridiculous amount of them. I must have had over 100 very young adults and countless juveniles. I'll be sending the heater into marineland so their lab can look at it!
If I do plan on growing edible herbs/veggies I will clean the entire system first and change up some methods/substrate (see Diana Walstad) and use the same fish since after months of observation I know they are now incredibly healthy and without any visible parasites/infections. LOL eventually I will grow edible fish! I went months without a single death until my heater debacle.
I Promise I will one day grow a fish that I will eat! Although I'd have to find someone to kill it for me b/c I get so attached to everything... Anyways pics of the new experiment of doing very small scale AP indoors during the winter:

I never got around to doing the aerobed mod that I had planned a while back so right now it's rigged for just the light.

The roots right after I transplated them from my outside buckets

You can see female endler guppies if you look close enough.

Anyways this is my way of enjoying Aquaponics during the winter without having the space to di it... Well... I guess it will be aquaponics eventually... This is just an experiment to see how these fish act around suspended roots. It will be cool to if it helps clear up my algae problems in the tank!
