I suggest running some split garden hose along the edge of the iron on the tank lid. Netting fish can get crazy and you wouldnt want your hand hitting the bare edge of the iron chasing a fish. Just a thought

Ah, good point.

I have no end of irrigation pipe that will do the trick.

Michael, you are at the stage where you are growing a bacteria colony. So I wouldn't worry too much about starving bacteria that isn't there yet. Patience... there is no need to rush out to buy ammonia when you yourself are a source of ammonia.

As the others have said, leave it a few days, check that your ammonia readings then. You might find that it is already close to 2ppm. Then leave it to keep going from there until both ammonia and nitrite readings reaches zero. Then dose to 1ppm again and make sure that in 24hours, the ammonia and nitrite reading are zero, then your system is cycled.

Note that although you had bacteria to seed your system, it still takes some time to cycle your own media. Possibly 1-2 weeks at least I would say...

I have taken out all the fishes from a system before, left the tank empty for 2 weeks without adding ammonia and the system was still fine when I added fish again.

Thanks, ivansng.

I wasn't aware you could leave it that long without adding ammonia; but in fact it sounds like I should be more concerned about the flipside - adding too much.

I'll test again tomorrow & see how it's going.

Although I should add that I was still running the pumps as if there were fishes... keeping the bacteria wet in the process..

Now the greenhouse fabric is completely covering the shed, it gets bloody hot & humid in there; 34 degrees this afternoon. Which is why there's some homebrew (barely seen) cooling in a sump:

just a thought michael all that dirt on your pipes / st if that washes into the water for whatever reason it could cause some issues, from silting to blocking pumps to water quality issues if there is any chems in it. maybe give it a wash off just to be safe??

Yes, everything needs a good wash. Much of it is organic crap that blew over everything as I was water-blasting the roof; the rest is just accumulated crap from everything being old and reclaimed.
