There is a new "national" noxious species list... as of April 2010.... which all states have adopted, with some state specific variations...

Here's the NSW list...

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/pes ... vegetation

Initially all carp were placed on the "destroy at site" list... but lobbying by the aquaria industry and Koi keepers has resulted in a three "class" structure...

Here are the rules for the three classes...

So what happens to your plants when you pull all your trout in Nov or Dec? Surely the plants will miss out on the nutes they need to power through their growing season?

There are other factors including the breaking down and slow releasing of nutrients by other organisms such as beneficial bacteria and earthworms. The plants do not just die because fish numbers are reduced or totally removed and plants can continue to grow though not a vigorously.

It slows down, but it's not entirely bad - plants grow within a specific heat range, somewhere in the 20's is best. When we get those 35 degree days in canberra, plants don't grow much at all. So having low nutrients in summer doesn't really set you back.

And like I said, I still have fish in there. If you didn't want to do that, you can use seasol or just pee in it.

The best setup, the one I'm aiming for, is a two tank system.
In Summer:
The main tank contains silverperch which have overwintered and are growing to plate size
The other tank contains a new batch of silverperch fingerlings, growing to a size where you can overwinter them.

In Winter:
The main tank contains trout, which will grow out in 9 months, you've harvested the silverperch just before you put the trout in
The other tank contains fattened silverperch, which overwinter and will go into the big tank next summer.

But I have a bit of a slater problem, which is why there is bare patches - the b'stards eat any seed that germinates.

So I'm currently flooding the beds - I thought that maybe this is why I get that protein scum. I still get it, 6 months after "the event".

Ok, so I have a deficiency, and I thought it was iron, but adding iron didn't seem to help. So then I thought it was magnesium, but adding magnesium (epsom salts) didn't seem to work. Anyone know what this deficiency actually is?

pH is 7.0

Plants taking on a purple hue may be showing signs of phosphorous defficiency and this could be due to cool temperatures in the root zone, which in turn inhibits the plant from taking up the phosphorous that it needs.
It does look like iron defficiency to me.
Perhaps apply seasol as a foliar feed, it has a range of nutrients both macro and nutrients.

I'll apply a foliar feed tonight.

Been adding seasol, either it is being taken up really quickly (and the plants are still hungry for more) or it's not doing anything.

Interesting re: the root temps, it's been bloody freezing here, max of 12 the other day... NOVEMBER.
