Hi everyone,

Are there any systems up and running in South Africa?

I know of Synaptoman and i have read of 3 or 4 others who have had or are planning systems, but is there anyone in Johannesburg?

Dave (OB1) is over your way Neil but I don;t think he has a system up yet.. Haven;t really heard of any over there that I can remember.

I have a buddy in centurion who is also about to start up an AP system..

I am in capetown. Would love to see what others are doing..
I wonder why Oz is so huge on AP?
I mean its not like we are not huge on agriculture this side?
Apart from the terrible accent the ozzies have, we are not that different, so why are the ozzies so active in AP while the rest of the world is sitting high and dry (so to speak)

Any opinions from the ozzies out there?

My sister works for the UN in South Africa, she told me they are there to set up schools to teach you all to talk better

Carel, i think the resaon is many fold.

Being a developing country with (relative to Aus for example) fairly good rainfall, SA is not as concerned with water conservation, which i think is wrong.

Also we are still in our infancy with respect to being responsable consumers, i have travelled Aus many times and they are very concerned with food origin chemicals used etc etc, we are more concerned about price so at the moment with huge tracts of arible land price drives the market.

Having said that i am too exploring ways to do this commercially and indeed what really needs to happen is the development of an entire new industry much the same way organic foods was pioneered in SA some 15 yrs ago and is now a household name ...... Ask anyone in SA about AP and they all think you are talking about hydroponics .....

We have a very long way to go in SA but it should be a fun ride ! Hell it is not yet mainstream in Oz either yet ..... but the thought and experimentation is there which is not the case in SA Barr a literally about 6 operations i have heard of, and only synoptoman is doing anything on a decent scale...... well for now anyway !

Yep water is tight in Oz... and I think soil fertility is an issue in Oz... I stand to be corrected
I've met one guy with an AP system her in JHB but his tank cracked...

My system is cycling at the moment, a 1000L tank and a 300L grow bed and a 400L sump, i plan on adding a second 300L GB when the system is ready to handle it

You won't be, farmers throw millions of dollars worth of fertilizer at the soil every year in WA to be able to grow decent crops.

Ya can't really call sand soil Gnash...

additionally it requires less walking to go out the back and get a lettuce and some salad veggies, than to find the wallet and keys, fire up the commodore, kick to roos out the way,take the missus down the shops, tell er to go get some green stuff and drive back . .

I had a hard time finding roos Freoboy - I think you guys locked them all up before I came over... oh yeah I did see some roo coats at the Perth Airport... was thinking they would look good on my car seats...

roo tail on a camp fire is my fav meal
but the skins make excellent car seat covers your right

yeah Joel showed me some roo steaks at the supermarket and I couldn't bring myself to buy it - my daughter would never forgive me... yeah and I enjoyed Freo very eclectic part of Perth loved it there...

Roo... my favourite meat... and the leanest healthiest meat you can eat...
