I read this quote from Jessy posted on Rupes "Aquaponics exposure in the Illawarra" thread

Quote:
Now all I need to do is convice a mining camp to set up AP for fresh fuit and vegies....That would be Awse

And it got me thinking about and aquaculture trial they were planning on the "Granny Smith" gold mine:

I'm not sure how it went or if it is still going? Anyone know any thing about it? OBO? Gnash?

I haven't heard of anything going on out there - either from Uni or industry people.

All the cyanide from processing the gold probably leaked into the water and killed the fish :D

Yeah, I know about that one - have been talking to Trevor Blinco about it.

But nothing in the goldfields.

I use to be an enviro out there (Inspector for DOME) and the fish farming experiment was pretty much Rory Lamonts baby so it probably went by the wayside when he left. He had a lot of good ideas about using mining rehab money for comunity type projects like that instead of wasting millions reseeding waste rock dumps that are just going to do whatever mother nature wants them to do over the next 1000 years. I seem to recall he left and went travelling so don't know what he is up to now, he was a good bloke.

Yeah, It does not work too well on modern sorts of pits, there is too much contamination in them, 50 year old ones are ok though.

Most of the water in the southern goldfields is too salty for anything to grow.

Can't really contribute much except this interesting clip from RadioLab, about geese, toxic copper mines, and bioremediation:

What is Trevor up to CD? He mentioned a year or so ago that he was going to supply fingerling in the metro area, do you know if he's still planning to do this?

Unless you're registered... you'll only be able to see abridged extracts of the papers...
