I like idea. Sort of like a cartridge filter system, remove and replace and clean when you have time. Just build a few more cartridges than directly required in the system.

I think the pipe would be too constrictive and block which is why you'll need lots of them, but what about a larger cartridge e.g. the stackable storage cubes/boxes? Same principle just bigger, and being square will be easier to work with and fit in a rectangular IBC. Yes will definitely give this more thought and play with this idea, thanks.

One of the advantages of the 50mm bulkhead fitting is that, in addition to joining the IBCs together, it will provide an internal female thread to attach to and in the adjoining IBC a male thread to attach to. This means I could direct the water flow exactly where I want it, so into a semi sealed exchangeable filter cartridge for example.

I've got it - milk crates!!!!!!!!! Stuff milk crates full of bird netting and direct the water through them. Rectangular, modular, stackable, removable milk crates. I've even got one or two with solid sides and plastic mesh bottom. Just went and checked and you can fit 18 standard milk crates in an IBC - 3 high x 2 wide x 3 long :D

Funny how AP gets you excited about milk crates stuffed full of shiite drenched bird netting

Pick up the phone Michael... I have a better idea...

Works really well... I use them in my trout system... although I used it as seperate "rods" rather than getting them welded into a block

P>S ... these need cleaning... but thats after about 6 months of pretty heavy feeding 60kg of trout...

I'll call later John.

I planned to check out the aerobic domestic sewerage treatment type firms and products to see if they had any ideas that could translatable to AP filtration. Does the biomblock stuff come from them?

That's the ticket! Nice one, I knew there'd be something suitable on the market somewhere.

Spoke to Simon on the weekend and he will visit in the next few weeks and take a photo or two of the prototype :thumbright:

The dam as biofilter project is going well, trout now 20cm +. Only had one power outage and the charger to battery to inverter back up meant all was well until I fired up the generator 3 hours later.

The delay on the prototype is due to a 10 kilowatt solar grid tied system I am building atm. Finally received the 2 x 5.5 kVa inverters last week but still waiting on the 36 x 290 watt panels, so running to strings of 18 panels. Will post photos of that too as it is part of minimising the farm and AP footprint :D

I am sooo jealous

Having a bore for watering pasture is such a luxury... having to pay for the power you need a small loan :blackeye:

I know that you have already started but if you are looking at building a commercial system then you would be mad not to seriously research the benefits of round fish tanks. For back yard systems it doesn't matter too much but for a commercial system rotational velocities are you friends and these are hard to get in IBCS.

re the round tanks - I now have 2 x 5,000 litre and one x 2,500 litre. They do work better at extracting waste and mine only have flat bottoms - tapering down to the centre drain would be better still .

the IBCs as tanks work perfectly well for large domestic or low stocking density commercial. If the water is drawn from the FT at bottom centre most of the waste gets removed. But this really depends on flow rates and water movement via aeration. I have a rubber cylinder diffuser (has more surface area than disc diffusers) in an IBC, and the water movement this creates doesn't let the waste settle much. Once a week a 1 minute siphon, mainly around IBCs outlet where the waste accumulates, keeps it clean. But I am not pushing the system hard, and enjoy the flexibility the modular format provides.

Actually that isn't really the case. The self cleaning of round tanks is due to the rotation of the water in the tank. The slope of the bottom of the tank didn't have much of an effect until you get to more than 35° and even then it can be minimal. That is why the bottom of swirl filters are so steeply sloped. There are even some tanks that have as much as a 15° upslope towards the centre drain and they work very effectively. Where a sloped bottom helps is when you want to completely empty the tank.

I can back that up as I was trialing an airlift swirl filter in a flat bottom tank (rotating water 12,000ltr 300 trout)
and it worked so well when it came to harvest time (drain the tank) bottom was clean, the swirl filter was getting cleaned out 2-3 times a fortnight :thumbleft: not wasted but, transfered to a fishless system
