Do you have to add any salt for fish. I have had to add salt up to 3ppt for fish health and it killed all my strawberrys. jerryandjuliel

Yep I think that 1ppt is about all they can take..

jerryandjuliel,
1ppt is generally just a good tonic for good fish health. check out the fish problems thread on the main forum page or post a subject there, even better use the search tab in the top right to search previous posts. :wave1: :wave1:

regards
Matt

I believe 1 ppt of salt can take care of minimal nitrite spikes and be a general tonic to help with slime coat and stress.

To deal with say an infestation of ick or other fish diseases, you probably need a change of at least 3 ppt of salt which would be hard on strawberries especially if the system was already salted to say 1 ppt and to get the 3 ppt change you had to go to 4 ppt. Beware, some fresh water fish can't handle much more than that either.

Something tells me that n8 must not be using much salt since those strawberries are doing so beautifully. Makes me think I might try some in my 300 gallon system this spring.

Neil- thanks for the complement
Sminfiddle- you want mine? I'm about ready to give them up for adoption. I have strawberry jam, frozen strawberries, strawberries in my salad, strawberries on my ice cream, strawberries in drinks, strawberries everywhere. Fortunately i have friends who still want them, but man, i'm really getting sick of strawberries. . . :? I guess I'm just an ungrateful wretch.

TC, you're absolutely right, I'm using no salt in my system besides the salt that enters in my fish feed. I salted way back in the day (over a year ago) to take care of some skin issues on the cats I had stocked at the time, but I doubt any of that is left. I'll measure sometime to make sure though. I honestly don't have skin issues. Sometimes fish will dent themselves on the bottoms of towers when they get too excited, but they're always healed up in a couple of days and no worse for wear.

I did have an aphid explosion on my cilantro in System1, so we'll see when they show up on the strawberries. None yet. I took out all of the Sys1 plants so hopefully that got rid of most of them, but I've learned the hardway that if you build it, they will come. :(
Anyway, here's a picture of my harvest from a day or two ago (2.5lbs!) that's what I get for skipping on harvesting over Labor Day.

Thanks n8 {gobbles up a couple pints of virtual strawbs}

Dude. Shoot a video of one of your big harvests while they're still happening. U will find it good material for the sales website. One of those, one harvest of basil (show taking down one whole Tower Of Pesto).
Jus sayin'

Yea, so long as my water quality stays high and the tanks are appropriately big, my catfish don't seem to have skin issues. That only seems to show up when I'm suffering from ammonia or nitrite levels above a trace or if I'm trying to quarantine larger fish in too small of tanks.

I'm definitely going to order some strawberry sets to put into the 300 gallon system towers this winter (that system because the pH is lower than my big system.)

Alright :D I'll try to do a video this coming week. I have to get all of my work done first though. . . :upset:

Anyway, put in another trial on Monday- Bok Choi, Arugula, Mustard greens and a dwarf basil control. The Bok Choi seems to have doubled in size already. . .Anyway, need to finish a grant today- I'll post more photos when I can.
