G'day everyone, I would like to get peoples opinions on running a system in Lancefield stocking Trout during the winter season and Jade perch during the summer season. The info I'm really looking for relates to the Jades more than the trout, but opinions I would like to know....

*Stocking dates for Jades
*Stockists in Victoria
*are there likely to be overlapping season problems
*eating qualities of Jades
*growth rates of Jades
*any problems people have encountered with Jades
*any interest in bulk buying from fellow Victorians

Cheers
Simon.

Don't know of any hatcheries in Victoria BB... think you'd have to ship them down from Nth QLD...

And you'd probably have to be prepared to heat them.... although I have seen them growing out in an outdoor tank on the Central Coast of NSW... which suggests that they're a lot more resiliant than perhaps suggested...

I'll definitely be trying some this year... but winter here, and on the Central Coast... is probably a bit milder than down your way...

I recon if you can keep your water temps above 13 or 14C in the winter you should be able to keep them alive. I know of several people in Perth who had Jades but all lost them this winter as water temps got down to 10 or lower.

Sounds about right Troutman.... my temps haven't dropped below 12, other than for a day or two this winter...

Last winter I didn't drop below 15... hence my decision to give them a go this season...

What is the shortest grow time for Jades?? I was under the impression that they could be a 6-9 month grow out. Could this be done if overwintered stock is purchased?

Like I said the plan....... is to grow trout from say March/April through August/September and then Jades from August/September through March/April.?? I also have my indoor 250lt heated tank to keep any slow growers should water temps get too low before stock is ready for the plate.

I have thought about it, but have no real clues yet on what my systems temps will be, over the year as I am new to all this.

Until your water temps remain over at least 16 degrees... Jades, or even Silvers for that matter... just wont eat regularly...

August/September down in Vic... doubtful.... think Mantis posted tonight that his tank was 14 late arvo, 10 in the morning....

Rup... You still considering the Jades, I reckon my water temps could be coming into play in the next few weeks. Is there a stockist you have your eye on at the moment. Reckon I'll get 50, anyone else in Melbourne/Victoria interested in getting some Jades?

Only just got my silvers out into the AP system from the indoor aquariums, and still cold weather coming where I will have to turn off the pump for the night to keep temps up.
I think we would need to get jade fingerlings in the early winter here and overwinter them in heated aquariums, then into the AP in maybe Nov.
Dunno really but my 2c

simon i'm in if you are going to get them! 50 for me sounds great! Also wouldn't mind another 50 silvers. Should then have a range of fish at a range of ages from fingerlings, yearlings to 2yrs.
