G'Day Gang,
Anyone have opinions on what will happen in 2012?
Does Nibiru exist and if so what is a good survival plan?
My thoughts would be to bury a shipping container and stock it with a good supply of seeds for when and if we can have a garden again and stock up enough dry food to last. Main concern would be staying sane cooped up in a container.
I am hoping this is all a hoax but being prepared would not be such a bad thing.

Cheers
Dennis

Is this the latest doomsday thing. I wouldnt be worrying too much about a story told by a woman who says aliens planted a communication device in her head.

 I have NFI what you are talking about but if it involves surviving the end of the world/civilisation I think it sounds like too much effort, I'd rather just crack a beer and wait to die. :drunken:

The Mayan calendar ends on Dec 22, 2012. A logical ending point if you ask me (Dec 22, not 2012). The calendar on my cube wall ends on Dec 31, 2010. I'll get a new one before then and hang it up in January. My guess is the Mayan's didn't have a calendar industry so they foolishly designed a calendar you didn't need to replace every year.

Maybe the Mayan's saw a big hunk of rock fly past earth and thought that was close. Then when they worked out the math thought bugger, next time it comes around it's going to hit us. I hope thats not what happened. :(

Actually, the Mayan calander ends on Dec 21, 2012 or Dec. 22,2012, which ever is considered winter solstice- the moment when the Earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun at its maximum of 23° 26'. (Gotta love Wiki.) As far as the Nibiru collision is concerned, the bible does mention a star called "Wormwood" in Revelations 8:11. I don't know about the aliens part- although angels and God could be considered ET's as they are not from Earth. But if you go with the bible interpretation, there are many other "signs" that are suppose to be fulfilled before Wormwood strikes the Earth. There are other Nibiru ideas such as the gravitational North-South pole reversal which is suppose to end civilization as well.
However, most scholars have suggested that the Mayan calander is based on cycles- each cycle larger than the previous one and the 2012 date finishes the largest cycle and re-sets the entire calander. For the Mayans, the Aztecs, and the Incas- the calander should have be set to an earlier end date- when the Spaniards landed on their shores- as they pretty much wiped out their cultures, their way of life and probably much of their history as only remenants of each of their cultures remain.

I do believe that most of us will know first hand what happens as it is only 1 1/2 years away. Although the hype does seem familar with the 1999 fear of the approaching dreaded Y2K issue, I really don't see our sociey continuing as it is now.

Indeed... Egyptian, Mayan, Incan, American Indian, and many other indigenous writings/lore... as well as the "bible".... (and archeological record).... suggest that polar reversal has occured previously through out history...

And it has been suggested that such a polar reversal could well indeed occur around the end of 2012...

Thankfully... the same "lore"... and our mere existance... shows that such an event is not a calamitous human life threatening event...

Hi Rupe,

have you got anything you can link this too... I'm asking out of curiosity as I have been watching how quiet the sun has been with regards to sun spots and solar flux compared to previous cycles. I wonder if their might be anything in it or if it's just coincidence?

Some interesting ideas here.

http://churchofcriticalthinking.org/planetx.html

I still think it would be a good idea to have some sort of survival plan. Although if this Nibiru is real and it does hit us it will certainly be spectacular  and no suvival plan will stack up against that.

Himzol, the links are numerous, but somewhat contradictory... and range from credible sources like NASA ... to the crackpots....

The sun is known to have a distinct solar pole and magnetic field speed variation that generally occurs every 11 years (give or take a couple of years ).... with another "postulated" grand cycle of about 11,000+ years.... that seems to be related to planetary alignments...

The solar cycle is known as "solar maximum/minimum"... and NASA has launched several missions to study it over the years... one known as "SolarMax", which featured in an IMAX documentary of the same name... and the current Ulysses probe that was launched specifically to monitor it...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Maximum_Mission
http://www.polereversal.com/index.php?I ... &task=view

But opinion as to the strength of the "solar maximum" this cycle (#24) seems varied... ranging from extreme to mild...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_maximum

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cycle_24

It is known that highly charged particles striking a magnet will reverse the magnetic poles of a magnet... and likewise it is known that solar activity can result in huge amounts of charged particles penetrating the earths atmosphere... which could result in a similar effect... as the earths core is essentially an iron magnet...
