Our council sucks big time, and the building expector is a right goose. He was run out of the last town he was in , with , I am guessing, death threats. Now we have to put up with the di@khead here.
Anyhoo good luck OBO and yes the sheep as a green (read trendy), lawn mower , GOLD TC

Hi OBO, just noticed the powder you've put on the brocolli leaves.Presumably this is to keep the bugs away, could you please let us know what is. We have a big problem with aphids here, have tried garlic/ chilli spray to no avail.

That is just dipel. It is applied to kill caterpillars. It's a powder mixed with water and sprayed on. There is a huge big thread on aphid remedies somewhere.

aren't those IBC GBs a huge amount of media to very little surface area for growth?

What kind of paint is best to protect them UV?

and why not have a rudimentary shade house over it all?

Cheers :]

1, Yes.
2, Any paint that sticks, I will be using a white uv resisitant external paint.
3. Because it would cost a lot more than paint will.
4. Your welcome :D

Abdul, he does it so that he gets enough bio-filter volume to cope with the load from the number of fish he has stocked.

he he, thanks for articulating that better for me :D

Rememer that ibc's take up the same floor space wether they are 400mm deep or 800mm deep. Leaving them full height gives a better standing position for planting and harvesting and better filtration.

I have never had a problem with excessive nitrates, so planting area is not realy a problem, and wont be. I still think that the surface area of 50 - 60 IBC's will be heaps :D

Although if you are manually shovelling the gravel into the full height IBC, the task itself is back-breaking... of coz plus gravel washing but you don't wash your gravel...

Exactly the same conclusion I came to with using IBCs for my DWC raft system. That and the bonus of higher water volumes (3 times the volume) for temp stability, and at least 5 times the surface area for growing bacteria on the walls of the IBCs.
