My vote is going to Labor after the Liberals announced their Broad Band Policy. It's just too bit a project to be done half hearted!

For this country to compete in the 21st Century we need fibre to the home not to just out side of town and then leave it up to the free market to do the last bit.

It would be like building a high speed railway and stopping out side the city and then having buses, taxis or what ever the free market thought they could make a dollar out of. They will only build in areas where they can make a buck and so they should there not a charity.

This needs to be done right for the future of Australia. It might be a huge cost, but not doing it will be an even bigger cost.

12mps peak speed for a wireless system versus 1 Giga bit per sec for fibre what are they thinking?

Mind you Abbott is Howard's love child and he was a big fan of the 60's and that's where we will end up if we can not have the best now.

Tony doesn't understand the broadband policy (or his for that matter) Tony's idea about letting the ISP's (as I read it) supply and install the infrastructure will be a license to legally rip off the system, and still country Australia will miss out, Tony doesn't care as he already has the highest speed broadband, I have a 1.5mb connection now and manage to download stuff at 150kbs which suits me fine, compared with my Morawa days of dial up at 1.5kbs :D it's a dream, but is still guys around here on dial up so they certainly need something better, Labors Broadband plan will create employment for a fair while, Tony's wont,
I have changed my thinking from voting Nat's (mainly because of where the preferences go) and will probably go Green, with Labor as second choice, Tony has offered around $15b in promises and Julia $4.5b (not counting broadband) so will be easier for Julia to keep hers, Tony doesn't do anything for me at all and doesn't seem to have anything that the Libs have let us down on before, and not sure on his workplace policy, not that it would effect me a lot, but would the people around me.
On a couple of online polls I started and have used Greens are nearly double the others in front, I think they will win a lot votes, especially from first time voters, hence they will get a few seats and hold the balance of power with a labor win

They ran fibre past my place 10+ years ago. Internets still slow. If they ran it into my place the ISP would still over sell the bandwidth and slow my connection down again. If the Gov(us) are going to pay for running it to everyones doors then they should make it free and piss off the ISP's all together. Free high speed broardband to everyone in Oz would have to give us a leg up on the rest of the world.

Yeah, I think the female thing is a stunt by the Labour party. Apparently hearing from a few people, their wives are saying "yeah good, it is time the female gets a go at it"... it would be interesting to know how many people will vote Labour because of the above sentiment.

In my personal opinion getting Telstra out of the infrastructure side is the best thing that could happen. It never should been allowed to go public as one company.
Greens are getting my vote since they should block any of the more stupid policies of Labour.

Well you can blame the "Libs" for the last part... and praise "Labour" for the first part... they're breaking up Telstra...

And now have access to all the old copper infrastructure, which Telstra would have abandoned in the near future anyway.... which should now make the roll-out of the NBN... faster,cheaper... and neater....

YEAH
Telstra allthough the hated is not the bad one here. The NBN can only seriously be completed by an Aussie company. So by using Telstra's infrastructure the network will finish that much faster. I only hope dl limits disappear and all we pay for is a connection speed.

Oh stuff the previous it might cause response. The only real thing here is on the weekend someone will be in government. Then we can complain about that.

I work in computers, and the idea of the NBN is great however I have to say it's hard to justify the cost. At 43 billion thats like $2000 per person in australia, tell you what if I was getting the bill directly I certainly wouldn't pay it..

So if the government just pays for it, wheres the money come from, well from me anyway in the form of one tax or another.

So considering the school hall program I have to ask, would it really cost some 8000 to have fibre in my house, or are they blowing a heap of money in this install. My money's on blowwing a heap of money, in fact my gut feeling is it might be a good time to start a fibre installation company. Laughing all the way to the bank..

Leaving the blatant political spin bullocks aside...

Almost half the cost ($18billion)... will be provided by capital raising by the NBN company...

And the original slated $43billion overall was the costing before Telstra came onboard and the government gained access to the copper network infrastructure....

Roll out costs are now expected to be substantially less... and Telstra will almost undoubtably become the major roll out partner...

The "shonks" and fly-by-night type installers that bedevilled the other schemes... wont get a look in...

The NBN will allow...

Videoconferencing, online medical diagnostic services, online medical imaging, video on demand and video phones, to the home... amongst other things...

Business... big and small will jump onboard rapidly... as will all the other Telco's... and home users ... and it has ramifications for defence and national security...

IMO... it will pay for itself in a blink...

It also returns a vital piece of national infrastructure back into the national/peoples hands... whereas the old copper network... that Telstra is still saddled with and doesn't want... and would ultimately abandoned.... is still 50% owned by the "people"... and is a huge liability...

Nice post Rupert
I think sometime ago they reassesed cost to around $26 billion.
If i could run the fibre to the closest connection point I would do it myself now. I cant wait for the incoming services this network will provide for my work and my family.

If the libs do get in i hope they see the sense and continue with the NBN rollout.

What I also find amusing is that I live in an outlying suburb of perth and the current sitting member for me is the same as for you.
