i took his classes, it was very informative for beginners. hes supposed to working on a vermiculture setup.

I'm on the Big Island....cinders go for $27/ton at Puna Rock...already have a raised bed dirt garden growing but am in the process of switching to AP...

I built a compost pile a while back for the garden, and to utilize the left over scraps from the kitchen and around the yard, but now that I'm switching operations, I was thinking I could use the new worm population I got as a result of starting the compost to feed the fish...save on fish food...

Fish might find the worms a treat (depending on the type of fish) but you would have to have a pretty good worm farm going to raise enough worms to make a big dent in your fish feed bill. Also, a diet of straight worms or BSF larva is too high in fat for Tilapia or catfish though as a treat they are fine.

I've heard of people rendering the worms and/or larva to remove a portion of the fat but I don't know many people who what that going on in their kitchen just to supplement the fish feed.

interesting...i have a really good stream of worms, but they may be better off composting my pile than feeding my fish...

On systems on Maui? I'm headed there in a couple months for a week or so.

I would think to much of a mixed diet could also put the fish off the pellets. It took my dogs a long time to go back to dog food after having to many table scraps. I would stick with fish food with a few worms from time to time just to supplement the diet. Not really sure it needs supplementing - most people have good growth with just the pellets.

I live on Molokai and we are in the process of putting in an Aquaponics system and also converting our present Hydro system.

Would love to talk with anyone who lives in Hawaii and is interested. At present we have talipia and guppies in the fish tank. Looking to locate some cat fish and fresh water prawns.

This is a free event open to Aquaponics in Paradise members and their friends and family. Visit Glenn's farm where he's got two 1000 gallon tilapia tanks and the latest growbeds and innovations in AP. There will be a free tours of the farm throughout the day (normally priced at $10) see his horses, chickens, goats, and ducks as well as his giant sized carp and meet your fellow APinP members!

Glenn's got some amazing AP setups, every time i go there hes got something new to learn about.
Last time i saw his new DWC raft system, the time before that he added 13 more growbeds, a portable system, swirl filter in the tilapia tanks, and the first time was to attend his class.
This is a great chance to visit an aquaponic farm. You can also learn about vermicomposting, see his flocks of chickens, ducks, goats, and horses.

I'm interested in learning more about aquaponics and meeting others that have the same interest. Please keep me post of any new events that you are hosting. I'm getting ready to start my first system and could use all the advice I can get. Aloha.

It's amazes me how I can start on Maui, travel to Australia and back to Hawaii in just a few minutes of researching aquaponics. I recently attended a workshop and am active with Maui Aloha Aina Association that works in education around the body and soil, yes soil. Looking at always learning and diversifying, I have just begun learning more on aquaponics. Glenn Martinez of Olomana on Oahu has really ran with this since first attending our Maui Body and Soil Conference and also displayed his systems.
I hope to visit and learn more from the people in my own backyard of Hawaii, but it sure seems that Australia is really standing out on the internet. With a son now married to an Australian girl and living there, I hope to visit some systems while visiting them in NSW in November.

Hi everybody,

I just recently got my system set up. I'm living in Kona, on the big island, and I sourced all my stuff locally. I have a pair of 20 gallon grow beds full of 5/8 black cinder. Using Ebb and Flow by bell syphons.. My fish tank is a round black preformed pond 3 feet in diameter and a little over a foot deep. Its around 80 gallons or so. I got a 600 gph pond pump circulating everything. I put in a few plants about a week ago, and they look really happy so far. I've got comet goldfish in the pond right now to get everything started, and going to get some tilapia from Coast View Aquaponics in a week or so after I get paid again. The grow beds are just two of the heavy duty black plastic concrete mixing tubs, and work really well. I built the stand to be a comfortable height and provide drainage for the beds. Works pretty well i think.
