The best I have been able to match your fish is to an Ornate Rainbow Fish...Rhadinocentus Ornatus.

Apparently a popular aquarium fish that breeds readily in capitivity.

Maximum size 5 to 6 cm in length

Thanks Jessy, Sorry the photo is not the best...

I'm not sure it is a Rainbow Fish... The tail is convex and spotted, there is a definite orange 'glow' to the scales and this fish is about 90mm long. It looks a bit carp-like with small eyes and mouth...

It's a real mystery... Especially as we caught it in a yabbie net in a local suburban (and probably quite polluted) stream...

Here are a couple of other pics...

Thanks all, and esp Orcy and Him,
I put them in my inside fish tank with the Comets, and they definitely are Empire Gudgeon... Checked all the sites. I didn't know they could get so big!!! Anyhow, thanks all round. I will add them to my AP tank as I'm getting a few mozzies - yes middle of Winter and we have mozzies!!!
Cool find I'd say... Oh and these two are inseparable, and definitely not territorial towards each other so I'm hoping I have a breeding pair!
