As quoted on another web site...
It's the first time I have seen a scarecrow wearing sunnies. LOL

Seems I've let this slip as I am busy keeping up the blog etc these days.

We have been getting nearly every thing we need from the AP. Its got to the point that we run out of nappies etc because we aren't going to the supermarket for veggies anymore and we have our bread, milk and meat home delivered. Its a great thing. and we must be saving a fortune on petrol :)

Just ate our first cauli for the season tonight which was very tasty. Our beans took a beating with the frost but we have a lot of snow peas and broad beans coming on.

Hope your all getting a heap out of your system as we are.

We sold our Murray Cod yesterday. We are really need to grade our 150 trout and the Murray's were just eating each other. We started with 70 and now have only 23 left.

We got $5.50 each for them which I'm pretty happy with and they ranged in size from 15-22cm. At least now they have more of a chance of survival as they won't be eating each other.

SO it was an interesting experiment but I dont think we'll go with the Cod again... They like eating other too much.

We tend to get a lot of "green" leaves and plant wastage from our patch so we have decided to get some chickens. They can eat all the green waste from the AP and it will speed up our composting. They kids will love having some chooks and we'll get eggs which will be an end result of the AP system. Any suggestions on chok breeds. We want something kid friendly that produces egss and not too big.

I have some ISA Browns which I bought off someone who advertised on Gumtree. They are over in Rockbank just near Melton. Was a nice drive for me since I was buying them for my parents in Sunshine. They are $6 each about 15months old.

Egg production breeds are Australorps, Leghorns and Isa Browns.

I would steer clear of Australorps as they are big and at times not too friendly.

I would suggest Isa Browns. They are used commercially, but in a home setting wont lay as much due to the feed. Having said that, once they get started, they produce 1 egg a day for at least 9 months of the year.

Chickens will also be good for laying for up to 9 years, so grabbing 15month olds for $6 isnt a bad deal when most places selling pullets at 3 to 4 months old means you will still need to wait until they reach 6 months of age.

0417078850...give them a call and have a chat. The chooks should be coming out of their moult. I want too concerned about them needing some time to start laying. you will find the chooks need time to get used to their new homes anyways.

I originally wanted 3, dad goes get 5, then mum goes grab 6....as we were driving out of the property, mum goes we should have gotten 8....bloody asians

Thanks for all the advice on chickens.... we ended up going with Belgian d'Uccles (pronounced Dew-Clay)

They are beautiful hens and are great with kids. We got 3.

You can see pics of them on our AP blog.

Added two center poles to the shade curtains last week so that we can raise the middle. Now the concrete is set I can See how it looks... Not too bad if I can say so. It will be great in Summer.
