2nd newbie mistake - leaving the hose on all night long.

Goldfish was dead in the morning. This fish was nearly indestructible, he'd survived a hell of a lot. Poor fish...

Optimism always, I hooked the continuous pump up again today, this time it is just making a current across the surface rather than going into the bucket that goes to the bottom of the other end.

Luckily this is not a stocked system, would be much more of a shame if there were dozens of fish involved.

Going to make lemonade hahahaha (get it?) out of my lemons. hahaha

Started, not sure that the construction is the best but it was the cheapest. Going to need help to get it up.

OK, 8 year old helped me get the frame up. It's just 2x4s with a 3/4" electrical conduit through holes, and straps to hold the 2x4s. Used thinner straps which made it more difficult to erect, but the thicker stuff was more $.

Welded wire mesh screen wrapped around the conduit.

Bottom of screen snipped at the horizontal wires, then twisted 90 degrees.

Then bent upward to make arrowhead like shapes. Landscaping fabric (nonwoven polypropylene or geotextile) poked through the wires, folded on the edges to maybe help make stronger.

BTW this is all inspired by Hex's tomato trough from several years ago, where he made a trough from fabric. Thanks Hex!

Hardwood charcoal poured into trough (I used four bags for about $30 at Lowes), any lightweight media that won't fall through drain holes would do. Biochar could be made at home.

Buttoned up, tried to get the thing as full as possible; shaking it down helped. Tidied up the ends. I'm sure it will all settle a lot more - the wires can be unbent to add more then re-bent.
