Nocky - about the same time you made that post, but jumping on the forum is not the first thing I do.

OK, here they - 30 black bream purhcased from Freo Hatchery yesterday, ranging from 5cm to 10cm in size. Spending the weekend in the aquarium while I convert them over from full seawater to freshwater.

Don't everyone jump on and tell me they're slow growing - I'm well aware of it. However, my stocking is based around my concept of ongoing harvest throughout the year, not a big harvest once or twice a year before the weather changes and kills everything. Not planning to eat these before 2012

Anyway, enough philosophy;

Been a while since I've had a look at you system CD,
Looking good since the last time I saw it was about 4 months ago and was still under construction.
If I could do black bream i would because they are fantastic tasting fish, pity its a 2 year fish.

regards
Matt

Cool looking fish they are. How long does it take to get them aclimatised to fresh water?

I can't disagree with the logic or the flavour Chilli, but if EB is correct, that is a long long time. They look great close up in the aquarium. It will be a pity you won't be able to see them in the tank :D :D

There is nothing like feeding trout, it's just not the same, feeding Silver perch. Lets hope the flavour makes amends.

I agree more with EB on the time frame CD
Mantis they are a freshwater fish that can tolerate a bit of salt.
A guy at dumbleyung has them in a dam, 10 years and just edible size, you will be feeding yours more, but still very very slow, I will have one with you on my 60th, I think if you go through OBO's main thread you will find he gave up on them from memory, but still a better choice than the bloody red fin

Nocky you had better come and have another look at my redies soon, they are growing quite well.I was sitting next to a fellow on a flight to Canberra recetly and he knows someone who has them doing quite well also.Theres a fellow at work who has some in a small tub with no air, they should be all dead but they are going fine.
I lost all my tilapia though, got a faulty heater which zaped me and when I turned it off they couldn't stand the cold.I will be taking it back and will let you all know the result.

They are a nice looking fish. Long growout can be a good thing if they keep the system going. Are they good to eat. Sleepy cod are a long grow out but are supposed to be a good eating fish. I wanted some Koi to keep the system going throughout the year.

Wow - big response - feel like I'm turning into the Crazy Old Cat Lady of aquaponics in WA.

Mantis - I adjusted them gradually over 48 hours. Couldn't find any literature on it, but I ran my intention past the hatchery manager and he seemed to think it would be OK. Essentially, as they are an esturaine species, they should be able to adapt readily to influxes of fresh water. Give me a few more days to make sure they survive.

Rick, EB, Nocky, Mattyry - they are less than 30% of my current stock and even less than that in a few months time. If they're slow, that's fine with me, just part of the mix. Still reckon I can getting to eatin' size by late 2012, but that's something I'll play with and post up here as we go.

Yaacov - thanks - anything will work as long as it's got some depth to it. You can go shallower than the 30cm dpeth, but that makes it hard to achieve the filter volume you need.

Don - glad to hear the reddies are doing well - bummer about your tilapia though ! Hate it when it comes down to poorly made equipment.
