Something my GF pointed out about this tax:

She was worried that if mining becomes a very profitable industry that the govt will approve more mining at the expense of the environment.

Twas a "knock on" effect I hadn't thought of.

Just another reason Boris could be right about a third party while I am not much of a greens supporter there is little doubt support is growing. We may finally get to see if the greens get balance of power will they all be able to play nice together or will it all seize up?

I always vote green........

To those that think about voting green but never do because you figure "my one vote won't count", just do it...... There are hundreds of thousands of you out there..

Carn the greens.....

Securing just one senate seat can make a big difference (just look at all the famous independants who have so much sway by holding the balance of power) and keep green issues on the agenda.

I had the same attitude up until about 5 years ago and realised the only way that change can be initiated is by voting for what you really want and not comprimising on a party that may have some similiar policies.
Bob Brown is the only politician that has the balls to stand up for what he believes and is not dictated by party politics and big business.
Voting for either of the dominant parties is similiar to the old Holden / Ford argument, at the end of the day there are only small degrees of difference between the two.
In our current world there is a belief that you can eat money and continually rape the earth to produce trinkets, the Greens are the only party showing common sense and positive ways forward

we live in a red-neck rural area with limited Greens candidates, but the Green vote always happens if I can manage it.

Recent polls were putting the labour party at around 30% popularity while the greens were at 15%.

Sort of strange that we have the same 2 party problem in US. Maybe that's globalism's reach, Countries loose their uniqueness.

If the indusrty is worried about losing money, maybe they should try to cut down on running all the adds. I have heard the Miningt ax will hurt us all one about 5 times inthe last hour

As usual its very hard to tell who to believe. If its true that the mining companies are only paying ~13% Tax compared to other businesses at 25% well sure they should pay more. The recession was made a lot worse by those same companies closing mines and firing people wholesale instead of riding it out for 12months.

However with the super-profits tax, and internet censorship they are trying to shove down our throat I just cant see them winning the election again.
Since the Greens seem to be taking the (to me) sensible route in that regard of parent education; law enforcement; and optional filtering they've got my vote currently for the coming election.

Very much so... We are losing the Aussie uniqueness and identity through flooding of mass media mainly from the US. Shame really, but it's happening world wide, loss of languages alone is rather depressing. Info I found from 2001 said:

Anyway......despite the fact that 99% of my own personal income comes from mining companies, I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

Guys like twiggy get a mere % of the profit the company makes, the rest goes to shareholders. The companies are not doing it tough at all, and the tax will not hurt them.

Dont forget it is a tax on profits above 6% (currently....will most likely end up around 10%) - this still ends up as being a very good return.

Come work out here for a bit, see how much money is wasted in crap and then tell me that they dont deserved to be taxed.

Yeah, I'd imagine native American Tribes. Same for the Australian languages of course.

Was interesting to see Clive Palmer on the "Four Corners" program the other night... admitting that his statement that the "super profits tax".... had resulted in projects "being cancelled"... was a "bit of an over statement"... and that in fact "they're just been slowed down"...

No doubt, partly due to a re-assement of the impact of the tax on financing...and probably more due to concerns regarding the EU...

Just as telling was the companies head geologist and project manager... who basically said that it wouldn't stop anything from going ahead...

Likewise... the "Financial Review" published an article that basically said that Xtrata had "grossly overstated" reports of project cancellations and projected job losses... in the advent of the tax...

Any every major economist and investment fund manager...has totally rejected the ludicrous suggestion that the tax in some way poses a "sovereign risk"...

Strangely, it appears that the mining companies seem to be suggesting that the government NOT fund losses in exploration and developement... instead.. raising the "uplift" figure where the tax cuts in...

And this would seem the likely outcome....

Wonder if that has anything to do with "personal" bonuses related to profit...

Frankly, Clive Palmers appearance on the "Press Club" was telling... being no more than a personal "old hat" anti-labour, anti worker diatribe... he even admitted that he "didn't want to pay his workers any more than he had to, or was made to"...

And "twiggy" seems to be trotting out the same old bollocks...
