This would explain why I see almost no aquaculture jobs getting advertised - how the hell am I supposed to get out of mining and into aquaculture when there are no openings ? :upset:

Restrictions Slowing Aquaculture Growth
AUSTRALIA - Tight restrictions are making it difficult for Australia's aquaculture industry to expand despite increasing demand, says Roy Palmer of the World Aquaculture Society.

Speaking at the three-day Australasian Aquaculture Conference in Tasmania, Mr Palmer told ABC News: "To actually get the water and then get the environmental impact statement approved, you're looking at a minimum of $1 million and heaps of time," he said.

"It took 19 years to get a mussel farm licence in NSW and there hasn'tbeen a new aquaculture facility approved in Queensland for 19 years."

Very true !

But bummer when you're looking for a career change into an industry that is expanding globally, out of necessity, but in Australia has the growth rate of a Xanthorrhea !

And perhaps this is just the way the respective fisheries departments like it...

Nothing to do all day except hold up the odd hoop now and then.

Yep. And well after the opportunity has passed, they'll then scramble to catch-up.

As long as something is not moving, it doesn't get past our pollies !! Have to say pollies - sure as hell can't call 'em leaders !

The reason there are no jobs advertised is that there are virtually no operations big enough to employ people, most aquaculture farms in WA are small part time affairs where farmers combine aquaculture with another farming enterprise. The exceptions may be the big barra farm up north or maybe a pearl farm. The Kingfish farm at Jurien Bay used to employ a few people but we all know what happened to that!

Every once and a while I plug aquaculture into Monster.com and search the entire US. Last time I looked, there are two jobs for a population of over 300 million. One is a purchasing agent for a maker of pumps and the other is a university lab tech or something.

I agree that most aquaculture is farm scale. Oyster beds, mussels, catfish farms (which are really hurting from Vietnamese and Chinese imports) etc... They don't need much in the way of technical jobs, just some seasonal labor.

Not sure where the stats about no new Aquaculture in Qld in the last 19 years? Barramundi Blue only started operating in 2003, unless they had a permit and did nothing with it for 12 years

Maybe they are only talking about "public water" type aquaculture ventures. ie, mussles, oysters.
