maybe the prefilter is more about protecting the pump from getting all clogged up with crap?

Well if you have the prefilter or the sponge installed, the crap will not make it to the growbeds... as explained earlier, we want the crap in the growbeds so that the worms in the growbeds can break the fish crap down further...
