I just got a fresh load of fry. Interestingly enough Joel was around and we were having a beer together at the time!

I didn't spot them but Joels eagle eyes caught onto them straight away!

Yep, got home from Johnnies yesterday arvo with three generations of Tilapia (thanks John). I've stuck the 5 breeders (~15-20cm) into a large aquarium along with 3 or 4 fingerlings (1-2cm) I've lost sight of the smallest fry, they are in there somewhere but too hard to see.

Now I have to decide what to do with the other 15 or so fingerlings (1-2cm) that are left over. They are still in a bucket with a bubbler in it.. I might remove some yabbies from a couple of half barrels and stick them into the yabby side of the barrel system.

I'll try and get some pics soon, they are a little wary of their new surroundings at the moment and I can't get the little buggers to come out.. But last night they were venturing out a bit, the colours in the males are quite amazing.

Thanks again John.....

Wow... In the tank less than 24 hours and it looks like breeding may be on the cards already.....

I have two males, one dominant and the other younger, and three females. They have spent most of their time hiding behind rocks and plants but this afternoon the dominant male is very busy digging holes, moving mouthfulls of gravel from one place to another, he's dug a couple of holes in the last few hours.. He's chasing the females around fairly constantly when they come near, while taking hardly any notice of the other younger male..

have you heard about the pond in Port Douglas (sometime in the 1990's) that they put half a dozen fish into... 3 (?) years later they poisoned the pond and used a front-end loader to remove 3 tonnes of fish

that's proof that these guys are extraordinary breeders.

I was looking up DPI sites today for a friend who lives next to the creek so he could identify tilapia if he found them in his section... in Qld the fine is $150,000 for possession etc without a permit.

Joel, that's what they do best, have fun over there and make sure and video the mating. Apparently there is a market in the adult fish film industry;)

A quick update ..

I learned a lot this week regards my tilapia ...

My wheelie bin systems are doing really good! VERY intensive!

Water is crystal clear in all bins...

Bin no . 1:-

I have maybe 70 2 cm tilapia in one bin ... grown from fry ... 8)

Bin no 2;- I have maybe 10 0.5 Kg Tilapia males sharing with 10 South Amarican cichlids

These buggers have managed to take all the pea gravel out of my submerged airlift bucket filter and spread it all over the floor ... so I have to cover the next filter system with some shadecloth ..

This bucket system is amazingly efficient ...

Flywire or shade cloth with stop them moving my filter media I hope!

Bin no 3:

Maybe 30 goldfish .. 6 inches ;long ..
also at least 3 Koi ... 10 -12 inches ..

Amazingly healthy!

2 Mini bins .. assorted fry .... various Malawi species ....

water is crystal clear ..

deaths ... only 3 or so ..

the buggers jumped out!

I am having to do weekly 20 % water changes with several of the bins .. cos I have not set up growbeds recently ... ... but I have some Auto siphones that work perfectly ...

I just got to try to get some interested party to donate BIG growbeds (and a big air blower) to the school!

but the density of fish .. amazing!

I dread a power cut!

" the Congo/Nile perch which is what Tilapia are. At the local fish store you can describe the nile "perch" as beautiful black bands with Red and Orange throats and how cool they are as pets because they have very animated behavior and mating rituals."

Anyone tried this in Victoria? I'm sure I've seen 'Nile Perch' for sale in Melbourne. They were imported. Would that be them? They fitted the discription, I remember 'cause I was thinking about getting some. :D

Whats the rules in Vic? Can you keep them inside or do you think these "Imported Nile Perch' would have been on the 'most wanted' list :D

Just curious......
