Lemme find a way of getting a little culture some of these microscopic monsters to you!

Then you will need to get yourself some fish fry my friend!

If you have grown fish from less than 1 mm to pan size ... then I reckon you "been there .. done that!"

OK .. no problemo .. microworm source in vic .. imminent!

Mate .. I did this and got lessons in all sort of stuff... got three MASSIVE tanks donated to the school, about 6 air pumps .. ALL my tilapia fry , other tropicals .. weed .. etc...

My student have got their fish .. and I am keeping a healthy breeding stock growing up for next year ...

People are so nice if you ask on sites like this ...

I BET ya 10 bucks ..

U post asking foir a micro worm culture local to ya ..

someone in the next suburb or two will rally ... (Maybe a chance of some free fish too!)

I visited a guy from the Perth Cichlid society, he gave me over 100 fingerlings ... and two hours of open learning ...

This wonderfil gent was keeping and breeding very fancy goldfish .. specialist .. also breeding Angels .. growing MASSES of rare Irises on the fish effluent .. this guy was doing it inhis backyard but VERY professional ... He was obviously making more than his mortgage!

MUch more than my teachers salary and living his dream!

Failing all that .. I will get them on ice for ya and chack with fisheries ... and despatch in the hols!

:blob6:

(I thought I would use that smiley cos it is unusual!)

Living his dream.

See that's where folk confuse us for lunatics.

Our dreams mostly involve nature and beauty, self sufficiency, sustainability, and the future of our environment.

What the HELL is wrong with you people!

Cars! Boats (mmm)! Sports, Be beautiful, be Famous!

Aquaponic veggies indeed.

Freaks!...

.. I really would like to know this ...

How many male and how many female yabbies would / could you keep in a tank of floor area 36 cm x 36 cm? (Asume it is littered with old coffee mugs and flowerpots, PVC pipe etc. etc. to give them hide places. Deep as you wish and fully aerated and filtered.

Please!

Pretty please!

I don't want the buggers to fight and kill each other!

I wouldn't think more than about 4 in that area Johnnie, I'm going by the size of mine that are pretty large now, if they are smaller you can stock them at higher levels for a little while...

Generally you won't get a death straight away from them fighting, you will find legs or nippers that have been 'removed' during an argument... So you could try 5, 6 or even 7 in that area and just see how they go, keep an eye on them, looking for loose legs on the bottom of the tank.

I like yabbies..... :D

These I will try in small stacked tubs... if I can get time in the school holidays to put together some sort of rack system.

Right now I have 10 redclaw and soon about 30 destructor .. (I can get as many of these as needed) as we have a stream near our home that has just started running again, so I reckon they may be coming out of theor burrows this weekend. Also some of my kids at school are going yabby fishing over the weekend so we can get a bit of a stock at school!

The one's I have were sourced by one of my students as well - what I should do is do an overnight camp at the local lake and catch redclaw, put them in a cooler box and bring them home -

Well ..

I paid $ 1.50 per baby redclaw yabbie from a pet shop.

Yesterday they were $ 18 per kg. from the market!

I purchased $ 10.00 wotrth of fat big yabbies .. and cooked them up!

YUMMY .. but ... $ 10.00 didn't go far!

I think we got 2 tails each! Tiger prawns are a lot easier to deal with and cheaper maybe?

If I am going to get into yabbie culture , I think I have to do it in a farm dam or something! I can't really see how intensive culture in bottles would be cost effective.
