It's certainly been a depressing day.. but lessons have been learned...

Firstly and most importantly... set your system up with enough filtration... before you get your fish... rather than playing catchup along the way...

Two... if I'd got the Barra about six weeks earlier than I did... when I was supposed to...

Even with the unseasonally cold February we had.... I think that they're "doable"... just....

But it's a 50:50 proposition as it's just so hard to predict how warm we might be mid October... and late April...

Other lesson, perhaps applicable to all who might be considering trying to hold them... anything below 16 degrees will kill them ... rapidly...

I'm also feeling your pain.

Would a greenhouse have helped or gotten you over the line? What about the evacuated heat tubes you had?

A greenhouse would almost certainly have helped, especially over the last few days... of course today is another glorious day.. with temps pushing toward 25...

And a hoop house was planned after the fish were moved...

The primary move was indeed to move the Barra into the tank with the evac tube array... and the Silvers into the "hoop housed" system...

Getting the stock earlier would also have helped...

Close, so close... and to be caught out by a day or two is frustrating... c'est la vie....

Surprised you've held that Daryl... I'd dipped to 18 for a day or two... but was holding 18/19 most nights... till the weekend... and it just crashed overnight...

As did the trout tank (6000L) down to 15.5... and the Silver Perch tank (1000L) down to 16 this morning....

Go figure... I thought the thermal mass of the larger tanks would hold the temp better...

I would have thought so to, I think the only thing saving me at the moment is that I am only pumping to the GB for about 6 hours during the day when its in full sun the rest of the time its just thru the bio-filter but it wont last much longer without extra heating.

Have you thought of putting insulation bats around the tank. I hear they are going cheap again now that no one wants them in the roof.

Was doing the same Daryl... and would have thought you'd be colder up your way... :dontknow:

What compounded things here was clear, cold nights... but cloudy (total), cold days... no heat regain during the day...

Sorry to hear things not going well, bloody sad.
John's barra have fallen in 1s and 2s, now 10-12 left from 80. My barra seem slugish and temp hit 13 a couple of times. Sitting at 16-17 during the day.
No I haven't finished the big system. It's temps have been higher a couple of degrees, but smaller range, so sunny days don't make much difference. Barra not taking food except when above 21. Ca't see if any dead, expecting floaters any day though. Luck has to run out soon.
Woke up last night 1-2 am thinking might need to attach hose to bathroom hot water tap and partial fill sump 100L to see how the temps are raised, say 55 - 15 = 40*100/1500 = 40/15=8/3=2.3 => 15+2.3=17.3
I'll try it tonight when get home from work. Need to be careful that sump not low (empty)
