I'd be willing to be that distributor but I really don't know what is involved in the importing and other business stuff. I'm really more interested in being a technician installing stuff.

I'm interested in being a distributor as well. Some concerns are.. how are byap pricing in comparison to vendors like aquaponicsusa after the importing cost, etc. Maybe byap could setup manufacturing here in the u.s.

I think the market is ready for it, but the marketing has got to be executed right.

Surely we should have seen this coming... but the quality as far as bang for buck is insulting. 10 gallon fish tank at Wal mart $11 dollars,1x4 white wood.$15 2 bags of gravel $7 dollars xtra small fountain pump $14 dollars ...calling it an aquaponics system... far from priceless!
The BYAP stuff is so far superior we in the US have to make our own to have any volume enough to even call it a hobby. Just watch that glass fish tank in winter. A real franchise would be nice. The shipping would be difficult cost wise..Probably have to be mfg locally. How does all that Aussie shampoo and stuff get shipped here and still cheap enough or is it really made locally?

i imagine a us distributor would be able to "farm out" equipment contruction, including using local injection/vacuum molding co's in the us for bin's and tanks,
as for frames, that's more of an assembly of parts, also could be made here..
as long as everything is up to byap standards
unless shipping from china is cheaper..

that farm in a box,,, yikes!@ 3grand for the atlantis system that looks like.. well..

as aquaponics gets bigger here in the us, there will be many fly by night type operations... setting up who knows what for people that aren't sure what they are getting into..

it really does look like the "boom" will be in the service of these systems

further thought on that.. it probably would be cheaper to ship it from china - i was just thinking of the whole "local" thing..

besides that though
i found this in my search for more info about aquaponics

http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/ ... 254516.txt

turning a car plant into a growing facility was something i was thinking about a while back, watching all the jobs associated with car manufacturing leaving - currently i'm working for a company that has several motor companies as clients - anyways, if they do it, i hope they do it right! not much info on the company

Their biggest system, the Atlantis I think, is designed with a 200 gallon fish tank, what I am guessing might be a 100 gallon gravel bed (that you still have to buy media for after the fact) and two raft beds. No extra filtration as far as I can tell.
Ok, in the raft beds the plant roots are gonna get covered in solids from the fish tank. The single media bed is only going to be perhaps enough filtration for 20 lb of fish and it uses two separate pumps. And this is for $3000!!!!!!

I could probably build a 300 gallon fish tank system with a 1:1 ratio that would support 60 lb of fish once mature and include the gravel for that price!!! And it wouldn't be prone to termite infestation!!!!!

Yes rather dodgy the "We'll turn a whole car plant into AP" Someone with no real experience in AP let alone commercial AP? They will be trying to find investors no doubt and trying to make a name for themselves.

We nearly had a BYAP franchise set up for the US. Late last year we were in negotiations and to the point of contracts being drawn up. However with the increasing Aussie $, and poor economic times in the US and worldwide, at the last minute it was called off because the other party felt that it was getting to the point of perhaps not being viable.
