Very interesting stuff. I'd love to start a blue crab hatchery. 105 days to maturity isn't too bad, and I eat 2 or 3 every week :)

I definitely wasn't planning on hatching them  A lot goes into raising crabs from the larval stages, although I bet the experience would be quite fulfilling to say the least. I have a little 16' bateau with a set of 10' butterfly nets on it for shrimping. It's powered by a little 50 hp evenrude. burns about 12-15 gallons fuel all night. There are areas where there are gozillions of baby crabs that normally just get raked back overboard. I was just going to keep a small bucket full for the system. The Brown shrimp season normally starts in late may early june. So I really need to get the system and my little boat ready.

Sounds like a plan BRB. You could do a lot of good for the population if you put the females back in the wild along with a select few large males.

The females don't taste all that good anyways :).

The Governor of Louisiana could do a world of good if he had the courage or if it was something close to him by regulating crabs to one or more seasons much like Alaska does. Instead of an unregulated amount of traps in an area with no closed season. The old traps have a rubberized coating and can last a really long time. Crab fisherman should have to turn in retired traps or pay a fine much like what is done with tires. I have set muskrats, nutrias, and raccoons free from discarded traps in the marsh grass on the bank. Even without bait they still catch fish and crabs occasionally. When I was a kid I could easily fill a hamper basket full of crabs with hand lines and chicken necks from the wharf in front my Mom's house, Can't catch near that much now but is still more than before the storms wrecked the fishing fleets, I Would definitely turn loose a crab in berry from my system but may get a biologist involved if it would happen which is very unlikely. Comercial Fisherman will not regulate themselves. Regulations were put on gill nets and tremble nets but with only a couple agents per parish/county the laws really just relied on compliance which just didn't happen, So the governor had the courage to just stop it. Governor Foster about 15 years ago declared Speckled sea Trout and Red Drum game fish, eliminating commercial fishing of them. Populations rebounded within 3 years.Which made even transporting them from other states regulated. I would also like to see the bad boys of the outdoors have to pay more for their crimes.
