Alright, now we have a fishing section to the forum... I figure it's sort of related to aquaponics.... :)

Does anyone use lures? I've started to try using them, always been a bait person myself really, but I've made a concerted effort lately to give lures more of a go. I'm still not convinced of them around Perth area.. Tried soft plastics, hard bodies, slices, and poppers of all shapes and sizes. Poppers are fun, IF something goes for them. Soft plastics get eaten by blowies, the other week I went through a packet of the things, all attacked by blowies and not real fish... Halco slices look good in the water but I've still had nothing take them.

Perhaps it's just me, but I'm starting to think it's a con. Well maybe they work up north but around Perth I get nothing. Lat night my mate walked up and down the beach flicking his metal slice with no results, meanwhile I was getting lots of bites and caught a couple of whiting. He tried again later on the jetty with a soft plastic and had no luck till he jagged a whiting in the stomach...

Lures work real well in the right situations on the right fish but for Perth I think bait will always be a better bet. I have had success on lures off the Perth beaches with tailor and herring and got a few Flathead in the river but thats about it.
Those Halco slices work well on Salmon so I would be using a few of them on your Denmark trip.

Lures are great for ambush fish... like Barra, Flathead, Bass, Murray Cod.... and for casting into habitat like overhead branchs... and work well for Bream around oyster shelves.... anywhere that you intend cast and retreive... Salmon and Tailor... for the same reason...

Rapalas are my lure of choice... but I'm rapidly becoming a "soft plastics" fan...

Bright colors on cloudy days and dull colors on sunny days when fishing plastics. (Fish are spooky on sunny days) Always try to fish the birds. See what the water birds are eating. No birds, fish probably aren't hitting on schooling fish/minnows. Fish the solunar tables and tides. The best day of the month to fish is the morning after a new moon (fish can't feed as well at night and start the day hungry) 1 hour after the tide starts falling or when high tide leaves the salt marsh draining the bait fish with it. Fish where tributarys feed ponds, lakes, or bays Big fish are usually ambush preditors and wait for the current to bring them something. Also fish the barometer. Fish on top water on highs and bottoms on lows. Also fish generally feed best on moving pressures by far best is falling. For me in the northern hemisphere the weeks of the new moon in October/November is by far the most productive and by Autumn the fish have the best size of the year.

I had to read that about three times DV before I realized that you weren't actually talking about pussy cats....

I'm guessing that perhaps you may have gone fishing once before BRB....

 I've wet a few lines....
And two mentions of the moon and a third if you count the solunar tables! A couple years before my ex left I was going to finance her some enhancements, either that or a new bass boat her choice. Well I just happened to spend alittle too much time at discovery health channels and a thin little girl had just gotten an upgrade and there was a post op scene where her bottom jaw was just quivering in pain even though she was oviously heavily sedated. My ex went on a rant that there was no way she was freggin going to do that. So I got the bass boat...I still have that bass boat...and all it takes is a key to turn her on :headbang:

I wish I could save money like that and get a bass boat as a bonus! :brilsmurf:

Anyone else use Alvey reels? I notice you mentioned them Rupe.. I've had a few different alvey reels over the years but recently treated myself to a new one, first new one I have ever had, in the past I have always had second hand ones, and generally only small ones.

First thing that amazed me was the line capacity, I put on 1000M of 20 pound line and it's hardly enough to fill the spool for a decent cast... Great casting with a 13 foot rod though, I was casting an unweighted mulie about 40-50m, I reckon if I had more line on the reel I could have a got a lot further.

Still not used to the drag as yet, my old reel didn't have a drag, when you had a big fish on you would palm the reel to slow down the fish, with these old fixed handle reels you would end up with a few bruised knuckles.

The Alveys are great for baitcasting/beach fishing... but not really for spin & retrieve... hence lures...

I use Shimano Calcutta's (overhead reels)... for all my lure work...

They're an older model... but at the time, and for the price i got them... nothing else came close to them IMO...

They still perform exceptionally even after 15 years...

Alveys are a great reel but the blasted line twist always turned me off. When fishing in heavy surf I found it very bad. I go for large threadlines when on the beach these. Fluger to be exact. Great reels and almost as resistant to bad conditions as the Alvey.
