From my last batch of fish that I purchased - 10 silvers and 15 jades, I only had one death. This is the batch taht was riddled with white spot and fungus. The one that died had the worst fungus of any of them.

They are all now really healthy - from what I can see. They are pretty hardy buggers.

Edit: Not so healthy at all - a bit knocked about atm so trying to fix that.

one interesting observation. The fish in the poly tank seem much more agresive towards one another in the really low numbers. I have seen one bloke attack his mates pretty relentlessly when going for pellets. he will be first on my plate

so it's been 9 weeks since I took delivery of my Barra. Only 3 deaths, and I still have clear water :D touch wood! 8)

Here's some pics from today.

27 fish in the poly tank, the balance in the vat still.

Am going to do a weigh today to try and get an estimate of total weight so I can use the feed chart as a guide to how much I feed them every day.

Now that the temp is up at 28, they are pretty hungry bunch. Also, the difference in their behaviour after putting 15 more into the poly tank is huge. They all come up for food now, wheras before, they didn't seem interested.

yeah, I was telling someone I have had them for 6 weeks, then looked up this thread and saw that I got them on the 25th of Sept. The forum doubles as a very effective diary too!

As they get bigger they are losing their head lines. Good to see. In older barra the line is a sign of stress, younger ones are almost always stripy.

Which tank is he in Mon? B247?

No, but the poly tank is under the alsonite panel in the roof. It is pretty light in there, so I am going to put a sheet of black plastic over the top to dim it a bit. I am amazed that my water has never been anything but crystal clear, am waiting for the algal bloom

I have algae growing in the troughs at the ends that get sunlight where there is no styrene sheet, so again, I need to address that with a cover of some sort.

anyone would think I am trying to kill them. Just scooped out a net full, put them in a container of water that was on the scales, 2 flipped out  and landed on the ground from about 1 metre up  , remaining 8 wighed in at 200 grams. 9 went in the poly tank, one back into the vat (tiny)There were some small ones in there, but going on averages, they weigh 25 grams each. every time I do this I end up with stuff everywhere, the HSM sets in (thanks les for that one  ) and I end up dumping them into the other tank without really size grading them  Times that 25 grams by 200 fish, means total weight of approx 5 kg's. Using royales chart, need to feed them at 100 grams per day ATM, so I probably haven't been far off.

36 in poly tank remainder in Vat, all of them hiding   they don't like being scooped out mid feed

Monya, why haven't you installed a SAFETY net, for when the fish do that awkward double pike out of the harness - like in the circus :toothy4:

Well, my water is not as clear as it was 3 weeks ago. Probably has something to do with the kilo of food these guys are eating every 5 days

They are noticably growing, and pooing A LOT.

I went into the shed Thursday night and noticed one missing. B229 didn't front up for dinner. Anyway, phone rings last night, my oldest BIL ringing to tell me he came around while we were out and decided he would like one, so he got his six pack esky, netted one, chucked it in with some system water, "borrowed" a container of pellets, collected a tank from roadside collection and plopped the fish in it. Apparently it was pretty soggy at first, but has perked up now, and is eating tadpoles he is breeding.

So that solves the mystery of the missing fish
