They must have know that you were coming. Just kidding.
I got there at 11 oclock at night last time and it was like Grand Central station, we went and got a coffee and there were people going everywhere, like it was peak hour. I found it to be soo alive, and so much to do. We love Melbourne!

I have to confess that I spend some time down there and do enjoy it. spent most of my teenage years living there
But the novelty usually wears of after a week or two
especially the traffic, noise, pollution and the one hour travel to get anywhere from "A" to "B"
Spent a week last Christmas in St Kilda and really enjoyed the food, coffee, music but I it saddens me when you are sitting in Ackland St sipping coffee and eating the best pasties all you can see are cars, shops, asphalt and concrete not a tree or a hint of soil to be seen.

Humans are strange creatures; we see a beautiful area and proceed to live and cover it with ugly buildings

Suburbia is where we chop down all the native tree's and then name all the streets after them!!!!

Wow DesertRat... you must only ever have visited little towns to have this impression of Melbourne ;-)
Try Sydney, or Hobart - they have shocking streets and congestion (sure Hobart's so small the congestion doesn't last long)
Or worse go overseas!
St Kilda is a little pavement-like I must agree, but there are some lovely spots (usually younger in development terms) that retain trees and beauty.

Hi KP
With my work I spend plenty of time in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and places overseas and to me they are all pretty much the same, Lots of buildings, noise, cars and pollution, perhaps I've been living in Alice too long where you can walk less than 10 minutes from the edge of town and you are in the middle of a pristine environment. Where if you have more than 4 cars banked up at an intersection we call it a traffic Jam, the air is always clean, the sky is blue for 350 days a year. Don't worry Alice Springs has problems but what place doesn't.
Regardless of where you live it's the people that make a place and your attitude to others
I enjoy where ever I am as they say "Be where you are" its just that I choose to live in a more pristine environment.
Hi FF
Went to the community garden which I thought was good and the Sunday Market along the St Kilda Foreshore and always enjoy a stroll through the Vic markets.

I'm with you desertrat...... I have 2 sons living in Melbourne and they love it, but while I don't mind it for a short visit, I can't wait to get back to the bush and open spaces. And no parking problems here.

HI KP
Regardless of what I think of Melbourne we are all living in the best country in the world, if you have travelled overseas it makes you appreciate that we are living in the "Lucky Country"

And Faye while in Melbourne a couple of things you may like to do

Visit the "Diggers Seed Savers" garden and restaurant down on the Mornington Peninsula (a bit of a drive)
The Dandenong Ranges (also a drive) which has some great restaurants. coffee shops and the Puffing Billy train ride
and in Melbourne my favourite eating place is "Lebanese House" in Russell St (reputably the first in Australia) good simple cheap meals.
