Nocky,

Please forgive if I'm stepping on this thread... If so, just ask a mod to separate into its own topic, but since we are discussing bsfl pod designs, I thought I'd share a 'how-to-build' for my current version. Just getting warm enough to put it out, but I think it will do well...

Lots of pics and a few explanations...

As previously stated, the idea is a large surface area that doesn't get very deep for max processing and least likelihood of developing anaerobic (stinky) zones...

I found the previously mentioned mortar tubs, heavy duty plastic with a 21 gallon capacity at Home Depot for $11/each.

File comment: The hinges are simply a few holes drilled with bolts dropped through and nylon nuts loosely threaded on. Keeps the lid in alignment but allows to be opened fairly wide.

Sorry for so many pics. Hope this helps someone easily assemble a 'pod or two. In the near future I will use a lidded bucket with a hole in the lid and a section of gutter downspout to route bsf larvae into the bucket from either/both pods. Also, as discussed here, I will test several different methods, beginning with astro turf grass as means to have the larva climb out of the bin into the capture guttering...

Ideas/improvements welcome.

No worries CB it is a thread about BSF not me, it was started as a thread about home made pods, and any input is welcome, I for one will take interest in anything that works, good luck post pics of the harvest

I like it too CB. Good Job! Where do the larve go after they end up in the cutter? Think they can get out or are they wash directly to FT?

Not real clear in the final two pics, but there is a downspout section between the two pod/gutters. I just need to hook a short section of downspout and have that empty into a bucket. Then the fruits of my labor will be collected and fed to the chickens and the fish!!

The matting I used is a plastic bristle door mat. The bristles are about 1.5 cm tall with 3/4 cm gaps between them. The idea is that the BSF would crawl between the bristles. I dont think it works very well. I would go with a coarse fabric or fine window screen might work. You just need enough for the BSF hairs to get traction on. What I think of as astro turf (very short green fake grass looking stuff) might make it harder for the BSF to climb. Mostly theory at this time with a little testing. When I get a good colony going I will try many types of ladder and see what works best. Unless someone beats me to it. I like the design but I think your drain plug is going to clog.

Not any eggs on the cardboard but all over the wall of bucket, must be a good surface to lay eggs on
