I reckon it's a good theory, but as with the gams, will have to ration them.

Have NFI, we found about 50 or so when we drained the old tank, many more would have siphoned away, they are meant to breed like blow flies and live on the bottom, original 50 went in yabbie tank but the can get into other tank, can't see them so will get my little net a trawl the bottom, if I catch some then I know they are breeding and reddies are eating them, I have to do some real gardening this weekend :upset: or I wont be allowed to play anymore so I will post my exploits at http://www.backyardfarming.com.au/phpbbb/
If no shrimp in tank then have NFI what the reddies are living on

Well how freaky is this, just got email back from MTI the NZ mob trialing Red Fin and they feed them...................

HI Paul

For our brood stock we feed shrimp bought in bulk. They like it and it keeps the system clean also.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,,

I new to here and this sport..

Want to try redfin

why...
They are in the river that runs right alongside my house
They taste good out of the river, so clean tank ones would be awesome
They eat heaps. From what i have read, the diet can be only 35% protien and they love it. any higher amount is only a waste apparently.. they just poop it and dont grow bigger, polute the water. Even garden vege waste and remains of filleted fish, mince it and straight in the tank. (Closely controlled but).

Questions:
1 Can i just net like a school and grab what i want (small ones)? They will be ok in the tank direct? contamination is what i am afraid of.. you wouldnt breed perch would you for fingerling?
2 How many perch for a 4 bed system and 3kL tank? Sump tank will be 2kL with marron.
3 Do we just grab marron out of the river also.. or is this like real bad??

Stangas we netted them in a dam, we are trying small ones as an experiment, I have 12 fish but you can try as many as you like, the files sent to me from NZ have several feeding experiments and we are trialing several diets, I wouldn't take marron out of season but yes you can do that, marron are very difficult to grow in AP though as I have written many times, if you net bigger reddies then send some over,

Adrian above has told me that they can be trained to take pellets but takes time, then suggests keeps a couple of pellet eaters to teach new stock, again if anyone wants info I have received please PM me your email address and I will send, make sure you can receive 5mb of files

hay Nocky, i sent you a pm.

buy the way one thing about wild cort reds is they may feed better on some days rather than others, like for instance when fishing for them with lures on some days we would see them follow lures in to the bank but they wouldn't hit and we could go back two days latter and they would fight over the same lure, i think a rising beromiter seams to turn them on like many other preditory fish so your reds may take some time to feed consistantly.

i notice in my fish tanks that some days the fish hitt there feed with more enthousiasm than other days but they do generly feed well every day unless there is a big change in the weather!
