Met "Phillip" at the Mossvale exhibition today....

After a discussion about aquaponics... he then proceeded to talk at length....

About, planting by moon phases, reed beds, "humonia & humanure", bio-char and... "vermiponics".... and told me he'd email me a link to his blog....

Funny how similar ideas randomly pop up within different peoples minds... independently, regardless of location...

"Phil" has been doing vermiponics... (and other stuff - check out his biochar experiments) ... for several years....

And the intergration of other livestock into backyard food production... a "pioneer" of "microponics" perhaps???

I hope he joins BYAP and shares some of his experience with us. I just completed my 2nd test of making some biochar for the wife's vegi-garden. This time the set-up worked but I did not realise how much risk there was of it continuing to burn due to residual heat once oxygen gets to it. I soaked the pile in water to cool it down after I had finished but obviously not enough 1/2 hour later about a third of it had turned to ash

I used the inverted oil drum inside the rubbish bin to work as a gasifier. Will try to take some photos of my next attempt. Eventually I would like to design a way to use the heat from the biochar production to provide warmth to the greenhouse. Anyone with ideas of how that could be done (cheaply) please feel free to speak up
