Bugger the small system! I've set aside part of my brain to start working on something to cover about a hectare  . I should probably concentrate more on the one I am building  .

Im only allowed to start small, but the wife knows I'll be makinig it bigger.... better.... huger!!!! I really want to experiment with the bonsai stock growing in this fashion as much as I want to grow veg. Everytime I go out the back to look at my current patch, I get rather sad.

Right now I have an idea on a system, I have a source for most parts except a FT. I need to keep the over all expences down below $500 where possible and so far I should be able to do it. Plus I'll be also looking into running the pumps off solar to reduce Power useage.

Hi Asus...

Generally power isn't such an issue, and when you look at the cost of solar panels, batteries etc, it would take many, many years to pay off the initial outlay.. Our 1-2 bed systems use a 60W pump thats only on for 15 minutes of every hour, so about 15W continuously.

I just looked up one energy provider and it's 19c/kW h.

15W x 24h = 360W per day

thats 0.36kW per day, so about 7c a day or $25 a year to run it.

I hope I have all my calcs right..

For a small system, (very small) you can build a system easily under $500 but you are not going to power it with solar for that price!!!

Welcome Asus
Be warned AP is addictive
Nice part of the world you live in
Just down that way recently (Barmera, Loxton Berri area)
Although I'm very fond of Alice Springs (29 years) my partner and I have parents and rellie's down that way who are not getting any younger
So we have been looking at properties around region, of course I am always assessing each property for the AP system.
So it's good to see a few Aquaponist in the area.
Look forward to seeing lots of photos of your system as it progresses
