I knew that European carp were banned in QLD as well as Tilapia,
But this came as a bit of a suprise!

Carp
European carp
Koi
Mirror carp.

General information

This fish is declared noxious in Queensland. It is unlawful to possess noxious fish alive or dead or to use them as bait. It is illegal to place or release noxious fish alive or dead into Queensland waterways. Penalties of up to $200,000 apply.

Scientific name Cyprinus carpio

Description Three varieties of carp are present in Australian waters: the common or European carp, koi carp and mirror carp.

■carp have large scales
■deeply forked tail
■single dorsal fin
■two pairs of fleshy whiskers (or barbels) in the corners of their upper lip. These barbels are a useful way of distinguishing them from goldfish which do not have any
■colouration is highly variable - they may be bronze or olive-gold, becoming pale yellow or whitish on the sides and belly or have a bright gold colouration
■koi carp are often brightly coloured with dark blotches over their back
■can live up to 17 years.

Distribution ■native to central Asia
■introduced to Australia as a sportfish in the late 1800s
■widely distributed throughout south-eastern Australia with smaller populations in Western Australia and Tasmania
■in Queensland carp have established throughout the Murray-Darling River in the Condamine-Balonne catchment, Paroo River, Warrego River, Nebine Creek, Culgoa River, Barwon River and MacIntyre River
■also abundant in the Logan and Albert rivers south of Brisbane
there have been isolated reports of people keeping koi carp in ornamental ponds, which is an offence and the fish must be removed

Cheers IanK

Yeah, I know some of the koi people are pretty concerned and/or pissed off.

Some of them have spent shiploads of money on their setup. I met one guy who has a 110,000 litre tank for his 30 or so koi and the window in the side is the main feature in his outdoor entertainment area. His tank is pretty much 3 times the volume of my pool

Nocky, yes Silvers straight from a dam can taste like crap thats why they need to be purged. Next time you get one put it in your aquaponics system for a week and then eat it and I guarantee you will have a different opinion. The Silver Perch industry in NSW alone produces over 200 tonnes of fish pa for human consumption and I'm sure there are not that many people around who like the taste of roasted turds!!
Compared to Redfin, Silver Perch have very small mouths so dont impact on Marron/Yabby populations to anywhere near the same extent as the Reddies do.
I wouldnt expect a reply from fisheries for at least a few months and as it appears you have asked more than one question it could possibly be closer to a year if at all.

I know the fisheries will take a while Gav, but have asked PP questions before and they replied quickly, hoping sending a letter to Gordon in the tilapia link will get a quicker response, I will purge SP if we manage to get one again

Anything over 10,000L now requires an aquaculture licence.... even for hobbyists... unless of course they don't intend to sell any fish...

There used to be a lot of european carp there 20 years ago.
The pump stations had strainer baskets capable of lifting a few tonne of fish at a time.

Cichlids - many are hybrids - doubt if you find any "true" cichlid species in there.

BTW - I could not see redfin on the list of banned fish for Victoria - anyone know any different? And where I can get some for my "aquarium with a bio-filter"?? ....Candyman

Well seems that Red Fin will eat everything in tank that's aquatic :| been feeding them mince as mentioned and watched them eat it but in the mornings seems a lot a floating mince in tank, so fed them last night and watched them for 5 minutes and a couple regurgitated what they ate :pukeright: went out for an hour or so, checked tank when I got back from local and mince all over the tank bottom :| yabbies that have survived obviously clean up most of it.
Don don't know if you have noticed same, but your cobbler probably clean it up, so seems gambusia may be the only answer, in my opinion they don't seem they will be the summer fish answer but I will continue with the few I have and help reduce the states gambusia population :|
