Hi All,

Can anyone suggest a supplier of either yabbies, prawns or trout in SA or can ship to SA(South Australia, not South Africa ) please.

Otherwise I am going to have to visit the local fish market and try some CPR...

Trout will be available at Tooperang trout farm at Mount Compass, but it's probably a bit too hot yet.

They sell fingerlings cheeper for more than 100. In the past I have suggested a group buy. I am after about 70. Would anyone be interested in meeting me down there one weekend in late March to pool our orders?

I am happy for now to get the other 30 as I have a small setup by that stage. Perfect.

I have also found someone to supply the yabbies. Been trying to contact this site http://www.crayfreshyabbies.com/index.html but they or he is ## hopeless at returning calls so I gave up after trying about 6 times.

Aqua Blue Seafoods ( http://www.aquablueseafoods.com.au/price-list.shtml ), Neil was very helpful and informative and has yabbies etc. Freight is $40 to SA but if you order enough stuff it all works out. $40 is nothing when you get berried females and they pop out 100-400 yummy babies (sorry veges )

Still looking for anyone with prawns...has anyone tried prawns in their tank?

How do they cope with fresh water? or are you talking about fresh water shrimp?

Have you tried your local fish mongers???? Most of the large ones will have live jumbo yabbies for sale, for eating (at least they do here in W.A.) and they will start breeding in no time if you stick them into the water now..

no one here really doing commercial yabbies at the moment... we have some in our dams but only sell them as people want them for aquariums etc... one day we will hopefully ramp up production... I have a guy that wants 100kg's a week live product.

What, at 30g average size for a yabby. That makes approx 3,300 yabbies every 100 kg. What is the going rate per kg these days ? Each season a female lays 100-1,200 babies and it takes 3 months in good conditions to reach that weight, how can you possible meet such an order per week.

So in a month just the order requirement is 13,000 yabbies. How much yabbies does your dam hold?

saleable size is 70 grams... I have 10 dams... still nowhere near the capacity required. Am looking at intensive culture inside the shed.

In WA Cambinata Yabbies have formed a co-operative where they get /buy yabbies from surrounding farmers. They have created a large business showcasing their region and package yabby products for sale to the export market. We shared the aquaculture pavillion with them at the royal show last year as well as the cooking stage.

Monya, is that using a container for each yabby system. I saw that online where they have have up to 1,000 per sq metre. If the yabby turns out just the same with flavour then it be a very productive system.

If they are in containers, how the hell do you feed them?

Don't know of anyone actually using those "yabbie cells".... I'm dubious about the claims...

You'd need a hell of a filtration system... (included in the price of course... )

I know this may be a tease, but there is no way i am going into how I am planning to do it until it is well and truly up and running and the marketing of the produce secured. I have been working thru designs for the past 2 years, and am getting close to a prototype that will work with a bit of luck

Your fine...I would be thinking the same and holding the R&D close to my chest. But if you know, how would one go about feeding yabbies if they were kept in these yabbie cells.
