We have a couple of cattle stations here in Oz that are bigger than Texas. But not many APers there!!
It takes about 10 Hectares to support each head of cattle . . . . and, no, they aren't exceptionly heavy beasts!!

A single cattle station larger then Texas? You could actually homestead that much land back in the day? Seems a little bit unmanagable and a bit greedy.

Just a quick search on the net found this:

It claims it is the largest cattle station in AU. 6 million acres is a long stretch from 172 million in texas.

Well, I'm wrong again!
But . . . Kidman had about 250,000 sq miles (about the size of Texas at 700,000 sq Km) under his cattle leases plus stock routes when at his height. Covered most of the Northern Territory and WA. The Kidman empire is now only 124,000 sq Km! So, I should have said "had" instead of "have"!

Lets have a crack at this one . . . I haven't checked it out, but I am led to believe that mainland Australia is 'about' the same land area as "mainland" North America, sans Alaska et.al?
Hell of a population density difference?

How does it work down there? Here in the US they say you can own land, but you are really just leasing it. We have to pay property tax yearly and the government reserves the right to take it from you for developmental purposes. So who did Kidman lease the land from; government?

My understanding is that most of the land down under is not really usable thus only 20 some million live in coastal areas where-as in the US more usable land can support the 300 plus million. Or perhaps we are just more horny over here....

We have various "leases" in Oz, Perpetual Pastoral leases, Native title leases etc etc.

I'm not sure what the ramifications are about reclaiming leases, but Googling "Pastoral Leases" make provide some insight.
Private Land ownership is based on the Torrens Title system also covering Strata Titles and the like. Government can resume Titled land for development etc but offers compensation normally based upon a combination of Market Value and the Valuer General's assessment. It is a great area of debate and litigation when land is to be resumed for one purpose or the other. Have a look at the "Traverston Crossing Dam" debacle here in Queensland where the State government resumed land to construct a water storage Dam, the Federal Government knocked back the proposal, so the QLD government is selling the resumed land at a profit!! Good work if you can get it!

Texas is 268,601 square miles, or 695,676.59 square kilometers. I doubt you've got a single station (ranch) that big.

But maybe you used to!

I'm a noob to AP. I live in Converse, TX. Right now I only have an outdoor FT... 180 gallon Gold Fish Pond. I'm very excited about using those nutrients to grow veggies!
