Watched a very interesting doco last night on SBS about the above subject called:

RIP: A Remix Manifesto

It was quite long and here's a link to part one on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdwN6rRU0Xk

The main focus leaned towards music and modern sampling and remixing but they also covered quite a lot of other areas, film, literature, art, science, etc... Very interesting stuff in discussing where we are heading with our copyright and IP laws, that your average citizen is being turned into a criminal by laws being pushed through by those with power within industries. One interesting suggestion is that we are due for a move back to copyright laws similar to what was around in the early 1900s.

Back in the early 1900s, musical performers made money when they performed on stage and people came to see them. Over the last 100 years record labels and distributors have been making all the money from distributing the music. Now it seems like the internet and software might be taking over the role of the record label and distributor, they are becoming redundant and they don't like it so they are fighting hard and dirty to try and retain some control.

There were very interesting details about Disney and how they copied many different characters and ideas from others in the early days, yet now fought so strongly to keep control of those characters now.

IP and copyright laws are stifling advancements and developments in many fields, especially medicine. Many areas of research can't move forward because a particular part of research has been copyrighted. Society has reached these lofty heights of civilization by building on the works of others, by taking what some others have done and then expanding further. But now we live in an era where everything is controlled, where research can be stifled by copyright legalities, because someone wanted to jump on something, copyright it, and now they are just sitting on it..

Very interesting discussion really, they asked such questions as - Where would we be in medical science if all research was opened up for everyone else to work with and expand on? This is how medicine always was, it's how we got to where we are now. How is it that throughout civilization we have always worked on taking existing ideas and improving or expanding on them, but now suddenly this is illegal. Surely this can only adversely affect us as a society, to stifle information, stifle drugs and medicines and plants, life itself. AFter all these thousands of generations of moving forwards as a species building and growing, helping each other, now in all our wisdom, we start to move backwards because of our own greed.

did you just throw the word plants in there on the second last line to make that somehow about AP?? very interesting though.
Sometimes i think we are definately making a U-turn as humans. Some things in a good way others bad. Like Laws, Computers, Internet, ect... are supposed to make our lives easier yet just seem to make things more complicated and harder to get simple things done, and on the other hand like AP people going back to the good old days of sustainability and simple life.

2nd that. No company spent a hundred thousand years making a plant from scratch. But a quick change and a cross breed and they take ownership.

I remember listening to a podcast some time ago it was about how the patent process has become corrupted I don't remember the details but apparently originally it was set-up to enhance the spread of scientific ideas which due to the poor communication technologies was difficult. In today's world the effect is opposite it hinders the spread of knowledge.
