Thanks C1

I was a bit surprised when I saw the berries. One had a good tail full, the other had a only a small amount. I just hope they don't get stressed and chuck them.

Hi Fishfodder
Your system looks like it is going extremely well
How are the Yabbies going???
I seem to lose larger Yabbies regularly - no apparent cause. But the baby Yabbies are all over the fingerling tank.
Cheers - ColinW

Hi Colin

My yabbies are breeding like.....well like yabbies  Lots of little ones in my small breeding tank and in the main yabbie system.

I lose the odd bigger one as well. I put it down to old age as they only live for 4 years or so.

FF - any pics of the yabbies? Although keeping yabbies in AP is quite common very rarely do we see pics. Keen to see how you've laid out your hides; it's obviously working for you!

Cheers,
James

Hi Mr O

Depends what you mean by successful?

I have two systems that contain yabbies, one bigger system that started out with around 40 larger yabbies and one smaller tank (breeding tank) where I keep just a breeding pair of extremely blue coloured individuals that I want to breed for their colour.

It is a bit hard to get pics but basically my hides are a mixture of bricks (the kind with multiple round holes), and broken up terracotta pipes and pots spread randomly and fairly thickly over the bottom of the pond. The terracotta keeps the PH alkaline, which yabbies prefer.

Despite having lots of hides the problem with yabbies is that 40 quickly becomes 20 due to fighting . I would say the main yabbie tank know has around 15 -20 larger yabbies and god knows how many babies (probably hundreds and still breeding). However I doubt that more than 2% of them will survive to adulthood. I guess their overall numbers fluctuate depending on average size and breeding season.

I could probably get the odd feed of yabbies but I am not that concerned, I mainly keep them so my 3 year old can watch them walk around the lawn :P. The little yabbies also become a food source for the small number of fish I throw into that system (tandanus in the next week or so).

Hmmmm, Armenian cucumber... They are my favourite cucumber of all time, soft skin, and they grow huge without getting bitter. Have you got many fruit from it?

I think my bigger Silvers are around 18 months old. I cheated and got 20 odd larger ones when I build the system just over a year ago. They were between 100-150 grams when I got them and cost me $3 dollars each. They are all between 450-600 grams now.

I like the Armenian Cucumbers as well. I have picked around a dozen with lots more little ones on the vine. I usually pick them at a foot or 18 inches. I read that they can grow to 3 feet
