Catfish over here in the USA is really good eating. We have actually decided they are better than tilapia. Cleaning a catfish is different than cleaning other fish but not bad.

As to mixing species. If you are trying for max production, they having species in their own fish tanks might be easier as long as they like the same water conditions. If they don't like the same conditions, then separate systems might be better.
However, if you have a large fish tank and choose fish that like the same conditions and will do well on the same food, then they should grow fine together. If it wasn't for the breeding tendencies of the tilapia, the tilapia and catfish would have been fine together. They were in the same tank in my system but I kept the tilapia in a cage so they couldn't breed.

Perhaps we will try some blue gill with the catfish in the future.

Most of the research on mixed species is in Ponds , species that live in different areas of the Ponds ( Top swimmers , mid-water and bottom) are usually selected , also the species natural food is taken into account ..... each selected for eating different natural in-pond food sources.
