Yeah Rupe - sorry, shoulda said that. I'll put it in place Sunday once the silicone has completely cured, and then put some more photos up.

Yes, as you say it will be submerged, standing vertical with the water being airlifted up and over the lip. Will obviously need to play with levels etc.

Also not sure on the amount of media to get proper 'moving bed' happening. With the amount in there I may not have allowed for the volume of air that will also be in the cylinder. Anyway, won't be hard to adjust as the mesh is only siliconed in so can be sliced out and the amount of media adjusted and then just silicone the mesh back in.

I've got one that the media moves around a lot and one in the pool with a couple thousand bio-balls that does not allow the media to move much. Both don't block up. So far anyway.

Thanks Duff. yeah, am hoping that the moving media will help break up solids that get lifted by the flow - will have to wait and see.

I assume that water flow over your bioballs is enough to break solids up or you'd be getting blocked for sure, I would have thought.

Can't make the airflow more than 40 Litre/min or the damn thing will take off like a rocket !

OK - I'm going to call it a technical success, but the reality is that the Nige Biofilter Mk 1 failed.

However, some thoughts last night, helped along by some Coopers, may have resulted in the way forward.

Observation: The media was all pushed up against the top mesh disk by the air (see photo below). Halving the airflow by removing one airstone did not fix the situation. Air and water is moving up through the filter, but I'm not achieving the 'moving bed' that I want happening in there.

Proposed Remedy: I think I need the surface of the water below the capping mesh, not above it as it is in the current configuration. This will allow the media to lift to the same point that the air escapes from the water, and allow the media to then rise and fall rather than be trapped against the mesh.

This will take me a few days as the cure on the aquarium silicone I use to hold the mesh disks in place has a 72 hour cure.

Also, should the filter work, I'll endeavour to get a video up on line. Haven't done it before so anything could happen

Hi Guys - sorry, haven't been online for a few days.

Nocky wrote:

Nocky - really well - the changes I recommended above have worked. Have taken some video and just need to lose my video-to-web virginity to show it working beautifully.

MrOrange wrote:

MrOrange - ordered them from http://spectrumaquaculture.com.au/about - they're based somewhere in NSW - have ordered from them twice and they're pretty good.

OK - here's the filter with the 'moving bed' action that I wanted. Managed to figure out the video conversion and how to upload it to YouTube - here it is.
