I transplanted this lettuce form the prototype system at the very start of the second system and although it has not died it has not done anything either.

A Zuchini transplanted from the soil garden at thinning out time. Again has not died but has not grown either.

A close up of the bean that sprouted probably 5 weeks ago and shot up to the height it is and then hasn't done anything since. You can see the yellow leaves.

another angle of the transplanted zuchini. Looks healthy other than the yellowing leaves and the fact it has not grown in over 4 weeks.

just a quick note.
if you cut a 1000L tank down to 600l - 700l, and you use the rest as a grow bed, wouldn't that mean that you have at lease 300l of GB??

still need more GB but that will hold you for a while till you can double it. May be cut up another IBC into 2 300l beds. May need a 200l sump though,

regards

matt

You are right Mat I have more like a 200ltr GB as my FT is cut down to about 750lt and the GB is not quite full as you can see from my photos.

No nitrates.

could be a reason why your plants have yellow leaves?
have you ever had a nitrate reading? (or a nitrite)

regards
matt

I'll be honest mat and admit i've been very slack on testing my readings. I tested once when i set up the system and again before i added the fish and again after the fish were in for a couple of weeks but being very lazy I only tested PH Amonia and "ites" never really bothered with the "ates" just figured that if the fish weren't dieing then i should have no problems. I now wish i had read more and tested more accurately at the cycling stage.

Hi BNDYBEAR,

In my aquaponics system as soon as I see yellowing of a plants leaves I test for lack of nitrate. If you have no nitrates your plants are starving to death.

I add a cup of seasol to my system and retest in a day for nitrates. I like to keep my nitrates at 60-80, my hungry plants just seem to grow best at this amount.

Merry christmas and God bless froggo.

Not quite that messianic F&F.... feeding the multitudes I'll attempt... especially around Xmas... and I might go for a dip later today...

But I'll leave the truely impressive stuff to he who would be king...

Just not sure whether that's Abbott or Turnball these days...

I have come to the same conclusion. Although I HAVE no idea what he was talking about with his scientific mumbo jumbo I have a feeling that HE DOES.

Keep the advise coming though everyone because there is always more than one way to skin a cat. Thanks all and i'll try and update this evening.

People have used lemon juice... and there's no reason vinegar wouldn't work...

Just depends how much you'd need.... the Hydrochloric Acid isn't expensive... and lasts a long time...
