Again, no... it has nothing to do with the fact that we currently have a Labour government... tax revenues collapsed to the point that we would have been in deficit anyway.... and the current government acted, as did every government in the world to stimulate the economy to prevent (at best) a deep recession or even worse a depression...

While this has placed the country in deficit... so it has every country... and in relative terms (GDP) Australias deficit is one of the lowest in the world... and the continued mining boom will allow us to repay that deficit quicker than most countries...

The current governement was also faced with the need for major infrastructure rebuilding... which should have been done by the previous governement while in surplus...

The alternative was to do nothing... slide into deep recession... with no tax revenue... and the inability to rebuild infrastructure....

That's what I hate about the two party bullshit of Australian politics.... people have such entrenched views that fact and circumstance of the time... gets mired, and/or distorted by pathetic ancient ideologies...

If we'd stop judging, and voting for governements through the prism of "supposed" beliefs... and actually examined their performance based on fact and action during their tenure... and the actual "ideology" enacted... then we would be much better off as a country IMO...

Thankfully.... I think that's exactly what ... ultimately... did occur when we through a sitting Prime Minister out on his ear... despite propserous times... people were sick of bullshit, spin, inaction... and pure nasty ideology...

Of course the die-hard dinosaurs of "Howardism" that have recently flexed their muscle...think that it was merely an aberation... and that the populous was just a sleep at the time... and will return them to their rightful position of born-to-be rule...

The current government is probably destined for the same fate... if it continues to spin, bullshit and fail to act... regardless of economic circumstance... and rightly so...

I for one... did not vote for a continuation of the same policies and spin doctoring as the last decade... sadly it appears that may be what I'll get...

Such is the stupidity of "centric" politics... and the donkey vote...

IMO it should be the parent's sole responsibility to ensure their children are not exposed to net nasties. That means taking responsibility and being proactive, not just sitting back and expecting the government to hold your nanny hand the whole time.

In my many years browsing the net I have never once stumbled across those sorts of sites that exist on the ACMA blacklist. It just does not happen by 'accident', you must go looking for it. Sure, stumbling across a pair of boobs is easy, but we're talking the 'hardcore' stuff.

My 3 main concerns with this proposal are;

1) By blocking the material, you force those who seek it out to go 'underground' - That means encrypted VPN tunnels to overseas 'safe-havens', no chance of interception in this scenario. Whilst researching how to bypass this filter they'll probably also stumble across such terms as 'TrueCrypt' and 'Plausible Deniability'. What chance we had of catching these sicko's will be long gone.

2) People with less technical nouse are going to think this filter actually protects their kids on the net because 'the government said so'. It will not (Google alone has indexed well over 1 trillion internet pages, the ACMA blacklist contains ~ 2,500 links.. You do the math). It will give a false sense of security, and who will they blame when their kid gets caught up in an internet nasty? The government? Will there be lawsuits because some lousy parent let their 10 year old kid have a computer in their bedroom who happened to stumble across something they shouldnt have seen?

3) Once the filter is in place, it will be expanded and we wouldn't know. There's (was) already a cloud of secrecy around what is on the ACMA blacklist (thanks to some reverese engineering of filtering software the list was leaked some time ago).

I don't personally care for the sites on the ACMA blacklist, that content does not interest me. I also think children should not be exposed to it, however I do not believe this is the job of the government.

Very true MrOrange... and that same responsibility extends to democracy in general...

WE need to take proactive action... and remain vigilant... passing our responsibility to a bunch of party hacks, intent on their own re-election or obscure ideologies... will only insure that we remain, and fall into ever greater control.... and that's irrespective of whatever "party" is in power....

I loved little Johnny and voted for him , I respected a vastr majority of his decisions ..... I am NOT entrenched in voting for any particular party ,, i actually helped vote in Kevin 07.
When you think about it ,, it is the swing voters such as myself that actually choose:)

Bring back Johnny , Malcolm Fraser ,, have Paul Keating and Pater Costello doing the finances BUT have Bob Hawke as the front man:)
