chillidude,

It smells because it has become anaerobic. Usually due to becoming too wet and not enough oxygen getting into it. This happened to me. My BSF container had no smells until it rained one time and a bunch of water got into the container. I tried for months to dry it back out but it was just too much wetness. The BSF did not seem to mind though. But to rid yourself of the smell, try to start a new dryer container nearby and dump out the smelly one on the ground nearby once the new one has started a colony and hopefully any more that mature will lay eggs in the new one. Unless you feel up to cleaning all the gook off the larvae and moving them over manually.

FYI, apparently they also "hibernate" once it gets too cold. I did not know this and threw out the smelly container once I saw all of them no longer moving in it. Then find out a week or two later about their hibernation tendencies during cold periods.

Yep - tried that - got $12.85 while some bugger in QLD got $40,000,000.00

However, it's not as grim as it sounds - the BSF are still producing. And as far as lawn goes, we do have it, it's just that it never needs mowing and I doubt even BSF could eat it.

Thanks Thorn - Yep - that's where i've gone wrong. It looked overly dry to me so I added some water and milk about 2 weeks ago - my assumption being that the excess liquid would just flow throw and everything would be fine.

I think I'll scrape off the top few centimetres, empty the container, and put the larvae rich layer back in on top of some fresh vege scraps. That should keep the supply going without having to start again.
