Well once again we are at the crossroads. We would like to add yabbies (my favorate) or marron etc to our system.

Anyone know the best place to purchase any variety of these crusty little mates from?

Don't know about purchasing, but there are a few docs on the PIRSA sites about farming them (also Google books) - they reckon just go to the farmers and ask to fish in their dams to get some younger juveniles.
or get some from the Murray (hope there's still some water left).

I got a couple from Totness dam (up Milne Rd at Mt Barker

If you find some, please post here. Would be good to get some females for breeding.

A lot of fishing shops sell bait yabbies(live). Cheap way of getting some.

Well the answer from is, Marron are tastier but take 2- 3 years to grow, are much harder to keep in tank and don't like condition changes as much, Yabbies (also yummy) we call dam maggots as they are easy to breed, grow much faster and eat everything in site even each other, Marron like space, you can grow around 3 times more yabbies than marron in the same area, marron generally wont kill for space but will either die from trying to escape or not eating due to being unhappy, Marron are the Diva's of the crayfish world and have to have everything perfect if they are unhappy they will eventually cark it, whereas Yabbies are the Barbarians of the crayfish world and will Rape, Murder and Pillage to make themselves happy Have NFI about redclaw, are they the same as Marron

The new duckweed yabbie tank. The PVC is the outlet from one of the gb's.

If anyone who is coming to the meet wants some yabbies let me know and i will harvest some int he coming week and keep them aside. Unsure how many we have or what size they are and haven't decided on the price, but happy to chuck a net in to see, but wont bother unless I have some interest.

Thanks Mon, but your gonna be busy with the big expo and we arent exactly ready to house just yet.

I'm pretty sure there are restrictions on Marron in SA, and redclaw is classified as a pest species..along the same lines as Carp etc..

You may be able to get a permit for the Marron though,

which leaves the humble yabbie.

Hi first time poster

i made a pond out of tyres lined with rubber pond liner, put in sand/soil bottom, hollow tree trunks, local river rush,s, local water lilies and a floating type of cress, this was then stocked with redclaw from local creek with some local fish. i only use a small sola powered airstone, i have never fed them but still get a good feed of redclaw every 3mths or so, when the fish get to large or to many i rerelease them where they came from, as i can trade vegies for barra, dew or reef fish with fisher friends, the only thing i seem to have to do is top up the pond during dry season. When i made the pond i tried to imitate a natural waterhole as when creek has stopped flowing, just over a year and no work involved after construction of the pond. the pond is about the size of a small swimming pool.

When the creek starts flowing ... the redclaw will probably "walk" up the creek....

They will do so by natural instinct... indeed this is how they're harvested from aquaculture ponds...

What does that make Red claw, Murry Crays or the giant Tassie cray then?

My pond has been paved at top level with rock overhang to stop the march off

to me a yabbie is a yabbie, just good eating
