Yep - After giving it a little thought I had also come to the idea that it's probably not the best idea I've had.

Thanks Chappo, we have descovered the pod works and they harvest themselves, but even after fayes delivery we still seem to have a lack of BSF in Narrogin, weather is back to cool so may load up again in January

Looking for advice from anybody else that is harvesting BSF :help:

My BioPod stinks. It's producing a handful of larvae a day, but it literally smells like sewer when I ( or the Mrs ) walk past it.

So I have the following options;

- clean it out and start again
- let it go and it will fix itself
- something else I'm not aware of

Any advice welcome....

A little Freudian slip perhaps?

As you know, a Freudian slip is when you say one thing, but you really mean your Mother!

As much as everyone is making a joke of it Chilli... that's the nature of the beast...

The process occuring in your Biopod is a "putrification" process... the smell comes with it...

From what I've heard... it's commonplace... although I believe it can be handled with feeding the right stuff, and maintaining the right temps...

Faye might be able to give you pointers....

Yeah Rupe - know what it is, and why - just curious if people have had it and 'fixed' it.

I know Joel's/Faye's doesn't stink and the BSF Blog guy says his doesn't either, so I know it doesn't have to.

As long as it keeps producing larvae my assumption is that it will fix itself, with me contributing by getting the feeding rate right.

Are you human?: Take me to ya leader
Location: USA, Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Gonzales.
Whenever mine gets too funky smelling I add a couple inches grass clippings over top and and it absorbs some of the putrid liquid making the grass clippings more desirable to the larva but also knocks the smell down. eventually it will get a strong ammonia smell. Thats when I think the ammonia build up is too high and I clean it out and start over. I dumped the muck on the ground and let it dry up and get rained on and washes out the ammonia. I then add it to the worm bin and the worms have another go at it. I may have gotten a free source for blue barrels in which I may make a half dozen of these to get bsf larva production up.

Don't put meat or other animal waste into the pod (other than a little sour milk to get the beasties attracted and started), just Plant waste.

and remember that the beatings shall continue until morale improves!!

Thanks Bill - I'll try that one. I don't have any lawn, but will give me some motivation to do some weeding around the place and throw that in there. Also gives me the idea of trying some bran/wheatgerm/psyllium in there and see if that helps at all.

Thanks Ian - haven't yet, but did throw in a camembert that I discovered fossilized behind something in the fridge and was even too funky for me to eat. Was intending to throw meat in at some point but might hold off until the system is really pumping.
