Hello Rick,

We have some Silver Perch in a Recirc system which we got from a farm at Gingin and we will attmpt to get these to spawn. However keeping Silver perch broodstock in tanks and then hitting them up hasn't been done successfully. Silver Perch broodstock are usually taken from ponds and then used for spawning.
All the fish that we are culturing will be going to Golden Ponds as the Broodstock came from Tony's ponds. So long as we can get the fish through to fingerling size the fish will go to Golden Ponds (and as I said previously he wants 1000,000 fish) and then the fish will be onsold to the public. So hopefully there will be fish available in a few months. I say hopefully because normally silver perch larvae would be released into fertilised ponds after day 5(when they have finished their yolk sac) where there is plenty of natural feed available to sustain the larvae and allow the fish to grow. The fingerlings are then harvested from the ponds months later.
What we are doing is venturing into the unknown. To our knowledge no one has taken Silver Perch through the entire life cycle in tanks. We are at day 20 and so far so good but we have a long way to go.

That's good news, how many did you end up with in the end Tony? Did you get a few through to a decent size?

Yep, what size are they Tony.... you say fry... which I take to be around 10mm max... rather than fingerling... 25mm+...

As you only spawned mid November... they must still be small... surely??

Are they taking a dust/crumble.... what size??

Or are they just going out into the ponds to feed on micro-organisms.... in which case they probably wont be 25mm+ until beginning of January... :dontknow:

Rupert they fish average 35 mm and they are on crumble. We're not sure how many there will be in the initial delivery and we won't know until we count them on monday when we transport them.

Just re-read your Nov 4 post... I thought you hadn't actually spawned then... but I see you were at day 20... That's pretty darn good Tony... especially as that's a fairly early spawn...

What sort of % of the eggs were viable... and what % made it through post larvae??

And, as you say... AFAIK.... a first to go from larvae to fingerling in recirc... and to get them to 35mm... in 50-60 days in pretty remarkable...

What were you feeding them... after the artemia????

Picked up 100 today, they are pretty small - but all made the trip home okay, and seem to be settling in. Will see how we go over night. Great price, cheaper than the feeder fish I bought to kick off the system!

Oh, and they seem to be pretty popular - there was someone on the phone asking about them while I was there, and they guy mentioned something about someone buying 20,000 in one hit!

What price did you pay??
I bought SP fingerlings from Gidgy a few weeks ago 40 - 75 mm long for $1.50 each, however there were only 80 instead of 100, so that makes about $2 each. These were from last years fry carried over winter in a dam.

Hopefully its okay to put a price up here, it was $39 for 100.
You could also by them in singles or 10. Which was 50c for 1, or $4.80 (i think) for 10.

They are around about 35mm.
