To true Rupe ,, NIL decent fish cheap these days ,, Lamb prices through the roof ,, and it's gonna get a lot worse.

Too right Chappo, will be heading over your way with a truck load soon. If Woolies are selling them for $18.95 the question is what are they buying them for as that will be similar to the price OBO will get?? I have seen them in IGA for around $17 but that was smoked which commands a much higher price. Time will tell but having been out there trying to sell the same product I couldnt get prices anywhere near what you guys are quoting.

The difference between wholesale and retail appears to be quite large with the duopoly we have

Don't get me started on the supermarket mark up on meat. Prices of beef in the shops continues to rise even when the price at market does not.

Why are heifers sold at market for less per Kg they steers? The uterus is not that big and I have never seen Coles selling heifer steaks at a discount rate!

Once again primary producers get bent over by the big companies and tell the consumer they pay more because of the drought but the farmers don't see a share.

Sorry, pissed :drunken:

Farmers get bent over backwards ,, RFLMAO ..... What about the huge compensations given to farmers in bad years ,, they scream poor "drought ..... umm , flood ,, ummmm global warming",, never seen them giving anything back in the good years?:)
As with most products it would seem the "middle man" makes the biggest profit , cutting out the middle man is the challenge.
Farmers markets seem to be a big deal in Europe / Uk , seen none of these options here in my area of Sydney. I for one would be very supportive of such a market ,, good produce at a reasonable price ,, no middle man mark ups , HOPEFULLY no wingeing farmers

Farmers markets seem to be popping up all over Perth, we now have one locally. Thing is, people don't understand farmers markets they way they do in Europe so there are guys buying produce from all over the place and selling it in their stalls. I got loose apples at the Kalamunda markets, bought from a Pickering Brook Orcharist (15km away), the stall next to him was selling apples for the same price, people were buying them without having any idea that the fine print on the bag they were in said grown in NZ

NZ Apples????? We have spent MILLIONS of dollars keeping those deseased things out of this country :)
The apples I mean , the people seem to be able to come and go as they please.

The ONLY way I see to make locally produced products viable is to make transport expensive,

Look at poor old OBO , I'm sitting back waiting for him to get his marketing going for $14 trout ..... then WAMMOS ,, I get a great big truck and transport Troutmans $4 trout up to Kal,,, I undercut him at say $9 ,,,Diesels cheap so we can screw poor old OBO. Now IF , diesel was $4 a litre , that would sudenly become far less viable.

No offense OBO , just using your business as an example of why cheap fuel wrecks local production.

Great in theory Chappo... but simplistic and nonsense in reality...

Increase the price of fuel... and everything else goes up correspondingly...

OBO's sell price might go up... Troutmans price might go up... the difference might still be proportionally similar...

Better to just educate people to read labels and be aware of the real cost of buying non-local produce when local is available.

If OBO is delivering locally he should incur a minimal extra cost. Say he has a delivery "circle" several restaurants at maybe 30 kilometres , added cost at 10 litres per hundred kilomteres would be the additional cost on 3 litres of diesel. ( original cost $1.50 ,, new cost $4, so added cost 23X $2,50 = $7.50 spread across 100 kilo of fish is 8 odd cents per kilo) A negligable cost increase.

The ancillary extra costs would be failrly equal for both OBO and troutman ..... extra feed cost etc,

BUT , the one biggest win is the added cost of transporting ( wasting fuel) that would be bourne by the one transporting long distance.
Suddenly local farmers / Apers become viable ,, Woolies and Coles find it cost effrective to buy from local producers.
It's the single biggest hurdle we all need to get over ,, the fact is that cheap fuel is the greatest addiction we have and the one we need to let go of.

Heh, Funny thing is the Donnybrook Orchard (not far from Trouty) has started bringing a semi full of fruit up here once a month :D

So yes, cheap transport either has to become sustainable, or more things have to be produced locally.
