would like to try a few yabbies in an add on to my little sys as a bit of a trail.....

any1 know of anywhere to aquire the lil buggers cheap.... damn aquarium i go to wants 15 bucks a piece...ouch

have considered going to the local park for the arvo and trying my luck... tryed the big park with lakes near me....but there was a pair of turtles there to my surprise and some HUGE koi... nothing after an hour at sunset so gave up.... was a pretty lame effort on my behalf.. but there is a better park in the other direction that SHOULD have some well it always did when i wore a younger mans clothes.

live bait at an angling store maybe?? any1 know of 1 in melb??

LFS sux, my LFS has silver perch for $7 and tandanus catfish for $18, and yabbies for $10.
There really aren't any live bait sellers in Melbourne, and due to the drought, there aren't many yabbies about, so the bait is rare. Find a dam, throw an opera house net in, wait over night and you'll have a half dozen minimum.
If you're doing this in a park, don't get caught, I'm not sure about the legality in public places, and don't leave it too long, some tortoises get caught inside, and it'd be a shame if you drowned one.

leaglities pft..... my only concern would be the turtles

when your usualy up to no good (any given day of the week for me) it pays to be sneaky and slightly paranoid ( in a healthy way).

the park i'm thinking of is fairly well hidden so should be fine...

I have read that there are 2 self-sustaining Marron populations in Vic.

my guess would be that those 2 colonies are gonna be a hell of a long way from melbourne.....

Mickey, from what I can find one is in the Devilbend Reservoir on Mornington Peninsula and the other is in OT Dam somewhere SE of Melbourne, possibly near a place called Red Hill.

Dunno how far they are from Melbourne - my Vic mental geography is not that flash anymore

One is in a power station's waste water outlet I'm told, so it's kept a bit warmer.

mornington pen is only 45 to an hour away...

hmm power station u say kuda thats gotta narrow it down to the gipie area then... i know a few locals i'll ask around c if any1 knows what the go is... one of my mates used to work at the loyang generator a couple of years back.

KP - warm water shouldn't be too much of a factor - marron like it pretty cold.

Mmm, explains why South West WA and Vic are ideal habitats. They don't really survive north of Perth. Would probably have a ball in Tassie if they ever got there.

I guess warm water into a body of coldwater may work as it could provide a better food source area - dunno !

Tassie doesn't need marron . . . they have these !! . .
